I taught 5 classes each 5 week term in Listening Speaking Levels 2,7,8 Reading Writing Levels 3,5,7,8 and Grammar 4,5. Community program which became part of SUU. Listening Speaking Levels 7,8,6,4,3 and Reading Writing 8,7,6,4,3 with Grammar was at first separated and then integrated into other classes. I taught Level 6 for one year and then was the Level 3,4 teacher in 2013-2015.
I enjoyed learning about the many different cultures that came into this intensive English program. Arab, Chinese, Mexican, Brasil,Japanese, Mongolian, French, Korean, and Swiss. I joined in professional development at the end of each 7 week session. We were working on Projects for experiential learning. We had many ESL homestay students in our basement apartment of our house, which got me into this teaching assignment while it was yet new at SUU.
Gateway Preparatory Academy Aug. 2008-2010. Cedar City I worked as a Montessori elementary teacher in the Primary level for two years with a mixed age group of 6-9 yr. olds. In working with small groups, individuals and a whole group circle we covered social skills, geography, math, language, reading, botany, zoology, and history lessons through curriculum we made in addition to the 1000 hours of training. We also put on Festival days using cultural themes to share with parents what we were doing. I was asked to head up a reading recovery team of 4 teachers, 5 aides in 2010 to test all the students in the school to see where they were at. We administered an IRI to all students grades K-8, one on one. We grouped students according to phonic/comprehension needs by skill level and found they were not reading where we wanted them to be. So we invested in an auditory program that could be used outside the classroom in pull out groups during a regular class day by the teacher’s aide. The scores improved dramatically until today, eight years later, the students are testing well. We found this method worked well with our Montessori program even though it wasn’t Montessori which is more visual.
I have been working on a book I am writing called Conversations with a Child. I discovered music was a way to teach children one on one to learn to read. I used this in my ESL classes at SUU and it worked well with adults also.
