May 2014 to September 2014(Prime Staffing as Locums/Contract employee)
Working through Prime Staffing as Locums- University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) - Sky-view Prison- MSN, APN, PMHNP-BC
Was responsible of managing an 86-bed unit (I’m was the only provider for that building, so they were all my patients).
I was the first provider in 10 years assigned to that building, that created a treatment team meeting to be held every day (they hadn’t experienced my type of practice in over 10 years). My treatment team consists of nurses, therapists, and security, it’s imperative for me to get everyone’s input. My treatment team is very grateful that I find their contribution invaluable, because they’ve grown accustomed to providers not caring about how they feel, and basically not having a voice. I’m a firm believer that the entire treatment team should be involved, in order to provide the patient with the optimal level of care. When I go to my building to see patients for anywhere between 2-3 hours, and when I’m done, I go back to my office to complete my notes. So, due to only spending a minimal amount of time on my unit, my treatment team are my eyes and ears, because they’re on the unit for 12-16 hours, which in turn enables them to provide a wealth of pertinent information.
I provided comprehensive assessment, planning, developing, implementation of plan of care and evaluation of effectiveness of interventions with revisions as necessary.
I Demonstrated thorough understanding of all requirements and practice standards relating to the prescribing, the administration of medications including compliance with organization policy and procedures, documentation, requirements, and medication education.
Interpreting health data to formulate a DSM-V TR diagnosis.
Initiating, monitoring, adjusting medications and treatments according to approved protocols.
Writing medication orders for patients as clinically indicated.
Monitoring medication and initiating appropriate therapies for certain conditions.
Cautiously prescribe medications that require strict monitoring, in order to maintain levels within the therapeutic window and prevent toxicity (Lithium, Tegretol, Depakote, TCAs, etc).
Ordering, conducting, and interpreting pertinent laboratory and diagnostic studies and procedure (i.e. x-rays, laboratory tests and EKG)
Meeting timeliness expectations of completing work as scheduled, demonstrating self-paced performance, and adjusting priorities as needed.
Ensuring notes and treatment plan documentation is in the specified format per institution’s protocol; problem oriented, corresponds to the therapeutic order and is legible.
Collaborate with the patient's total treatment team in order to formulate a total treatment plan.
Providing on-going client education.

Additional Information
I would really like to add my clinical rotation experience. For my clinical
rotation I selected Dr. E. Starbranch, as my preceptor/mentor. Dr. Starbranch
is highly regarded and has 45 years of experience in psychiatry.
I had the honor of having a preceptorship with a psychiatrist that is
incredibly respected by her peers, and well known in the Psychiatric
community. Due to Dr. Starbranch having 45 years or experience in
psychiatry, I gained a wealth of knowledge. I utilize all the
knowledge that I gained, into my practice.
My internship started in January and ended in August 2013. I did 540 hours
rotation, but, due to Dr. Starbanch's heavy patient load, I went over
the required 540 hours.
I went to every hospital that Dr. Starbranch had patients, and that totaled 5
hospitals. She was also medical director of two of those hospitals, so I was
privileged to experience her management style.
I gained a wealth of experience with in-patient, outpatient and private practice.
Gained experience in Telemedicine and partial hospitalization program care.
Dr. Starbranch also had two offices that she saw patients, so, it provided exposure to a multitude of cultures, socioeconomic status, and working the underserved.
I had the opportunity to shadow her in all settings, and she always stopped,
to explain why she is going with the method of care. She explained the
reason she gave the diagnosis and why she prescribed each medication, for
that specific patient. She told me about how certain drugs, when prescribed
together, react within the body, and to watch prescribing medications that
cause severe adverse reactions, when combined.
I was also granted access to talk with the pharmaceutical representatives,
about all the preexisting and new drugs on the market. The representatives told
me about the advantages, possible side effects, and feedback received from
providers that implemented that specific medication, in their practice.
That said, I received a well-versed education in psychiatry.
That will enable me to practice to the best of my ability and provide my
employer with an employee that will do their possible best, at all times. An
employee that is ready to learn, a team player, and willing to collaborate with the health care team, to deliver the best possible care for our clients.
After graduation and receiving my NP, I continued working with Dr. Starbranch as provider at her clinics, for a few months. Writer was then offered a position with a larger organization and accepted the position. Goals were to expand knowledge, increase growth and experience.
