Medical Officer Grade 3, Stikland Psychiatric Hospital, Bellville, South-Africa Stikland Psychiatric Hospital is a 370-bed in-patient facility located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is one of three tertiary psychiatric institutions in the province. Besides the in-patient facilities, the hospital covers a range of mental health services that includes substance abuse treatment, psychiatric assessment and diagnosis, outpatient services, geriatric services, therapeutic services, and psychosocial rehabilitation. As a Principal MD at Stikland hospital, I provided psychiatric care across outpatient, acute, and long-term wards while managing emergencies and managing multidisciplinary teams. My role encompassed leadership in bed management, staff supervision, academic mentorship, and community initiatives. I also contributed to research, administrative duties, and facilitated patient transitions between care levels.

Clinical Service Delivery:
Provide comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic mental health conditions through Assertive Community Therapy (ACT) and inpatient care in acute, medium, and long-term psychiatric wards.
Appointed as a Principal MD for the medium-term ward, with 30-40 patients under my direct care.
Diagnosed and managed psychiatric emergencies, including aggression, suicidality, and other high risk patients.
Prescribed and monitored psychotropic medications, addressing side effects and ensuring medication adherence.

Career Highlights
During my 11-year tenure with the ACT team at Stikland Hospital, I played a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive care to a growing caseload of 110 to nearly 140 patients. As a Principal MD, I provided regular consultations, ensured medication compliance, managed co- morbid substance use, and focused on relapse prevention. My efforts significantly reduced readmissions for many patients and helped 20 – 30 individuals overcome substance use, improving their quality of life and family relationships. Notably, several of these patients achieved rehabilitation milestones, regaining functionality and re-entering the labor workforce.
