Software Development Work Experience

Telstar Agility - Vancouver, BC (2004–2023)

Agile Coach / Sr. Scrum Master / Agile Lead / Agile Project Manager

● Leadership and coaching of Agile software development teams and enterprises to improve, customize, and scale their Agile frameworks and methodologies pragmatically.

● Built a reputation in the past 18 years of identifying a team’s non-Agile Ways of Working (WoW) and implementing improved WoW instead.

● Strong negotiator and facilitator.

Finning Canada – Edmonton AB (Jan-Jun 2022) – a 100% remote 6-month contract role

Scrum Master for 3 squads/teams (concurrently) for the CUBIQ EarthWorks group - two DevOps / Scrum squads and one Kanban squad.

Agile Consultant for 4 squads/teams (concurrently) for the CUBIQ Dealer Services group. All four were Scrum squads.

Used Azure DevOps (ADO) as the system-of-record, including its wiki and the Microsoft Teams app for remote meetings.

Transformed the EarthWorks group’s squads from a group whose Scrum Master was a traditional project manager into one that was much more Agile in their WoW (Way of Working).

Starting with 3 groups of individual developers and testers, I transformed their WoW to be much more collaborative, and focused on the squad’s sprint goals – rather than on individuals’ tasks.

Fully supported by the Dev Lead / HS2 Project Mgr. Process improvements included:

oWalking the Sprint Backlog View of the Scrum teams’ backlog in priority order, ensuring task owners (within each “story team”) were collaborating effectively in their work on each story.

Implemented the concept of The Three Amigos – a tester; a developer; and the PO – working collaboratively on each story.

Designed the concept of a single Work-in-Progress state for user stories – rather than devs “throwing their work over the wall” to testers (as the states of Developing; Ready to Test; and Testing imply).

Added additional states for work items in ADO, to cover their full life cycle (from Ready to Refine to Tested in Production and Closed).

In my Agile Consultant role, I was fully supported by the Global Software Development Lead. Process improvements included:

oCompletely overhauled of the wiki documentation for all 6 Dealer Services squads - to expose the teams to new Agile WoW (Ways of Working) guidelines for them to follow.

I was the primary contributor to most of the Agile ideas behind each wiki improvement.

oRecommended significant process improvements to their Azure DevOps tool.

oObserved each of 4 Dealer Services squads (each for a 1-2 sprint period), taking note of non-Agile WoW, making recommendations to the Global SW Dev Lead re any non-Agile behaviours.

oFacilitated a 2-hour long Spotify Agile Self-Assessment workshop for each of 3 squads.

Modified the process to suit the squads and documented the results – including a radar chart of the (self-assessed) Agile strengths and weaknesses of each squad.

oPersonally mentored one high-performing Scrum Master to support the rest of the Dealer Services’ Scrum Masters and POs after June 2022 (when my contract expired) re the proposed new WoW guidelines.
