In my position as Controller at a major automotive component supplier, I was at the facility at a time of change in customers and processes. The plant transitioned from a 42% Gross Margin product to a 24% GM product. They were a similar product, but at a lower selling price. We worked extremely hard to reduce production costs through reduced cycle times and testing and the eventual elimination of several test stands. Over time, we improved gross margins back to a normal percentage based on our cost cutting measures.
After transferring to another division as Manager of Financial Reporting, I was charged with setting up the Division staff to support both the US and European facilities. This required identifying a standard financial ERP system (BPCS) and a means of consolidating the monthly financial data using ESSBASE. The IT department and my finance group worked closely to ensure an effective reporting system in a minimum amount of time. Without this dedicated effort, the company would have had additional expense to manage the financial information. This was completed within one year while still performing the daily financial functions.
As Corporate Controller, I coordinated the move of the corporate offices from California to Michigan after the merger of two companies into one small public corporation. This transition included reviewing and relocating corporate financial data and setting up a corporate staff to handle a consolidated payroll (3 facilities), setup a Shared Services department to handle AR, AP and Fixed Assets, the corporate reporting and analysis department to develop reports and analyze, consolidate and report monthly financial data to management and Board of Directors.
In addition to the above, I prepared quarterly 10-Q’s and annual 10-K’s for review with the CEO & CFO prior to filing the required SEC financials. Although this did not result in a monetary savings to the corporation, it rounded out my knowledge base to be able to handle any aspect of corporate accounting.
I directed the financial team with closing a Wisconsin facility and merging with our California facility. The team goal was to transfer inventory with minimal shipment interruption to our customers, sell or transfer assets, relocate all documentation and close the facility. The closure affected 43 employees, resulting in an annual operating savings over $1.5 million.
I worked with a SOX consulting company on our Internal Control documentation. This required a large amount of my time to review policies and procedures, identify risk assessments and define improvement opportunities. By dedicating my time to this project, the corporation saved well over $200,000 by not having to bring in outside resources to perform the same function.
In each of my Controller positions, our staff was lean. I took it upon myself to get fully involved in account reconciliations to assist the staff in meeting time constraints. Accurate account reconciliations were mandatory and greatly enhanced the year-end audit.
