Research Experiences

AU Department of Psychology August 2021- Present

Master’s Thesis Advisor/Principal Investigator: Jonathan Tubman, Ph.D.

Master’s thesis proposal and defend exploratory study among sexual and gender minorities and investigate if racial/ethnic minority status is associated with higher scores for substance use problems, minority stressors, forms of intimate partner violence, and self-perceived health.

Collaborate with colleagues on manuscripts and posters using data from a cross-sectional study of sexual minority emerging adults and associations of substance use scores with other measures of lifetime trauma, consequences of substance use, minority stress, and intimate partner violence.

Investigate how adverse childhood experiences (ACES) are associated with substance use and intimate partner violence in emerging adult LGBTQI+ relationships.

Study intimate partner violence (IPV), substance use, lifetime experiences of trauma, and psychological health outcomes among multiethnic transgender populations.

Review various valid and reliable self-report questionnaires (e.g., DAST, AUDIT, SIP-R) used in a cross-sectional study of sexual minority emerging adults (gay, lesbian, bisexual men and women, and transgender individuals) to investigate the roles of substance use from micro and macro social (individual-, relationship- and community-level) risk factors for their experiences of intimate partner violence, minority stressors, and intersectional framework.

Present lab research findings at national conferences like the Society of Prevention Research.

Review current assessment tools that evaluate adolescents’ risk-taking behaviors, substance use, and antisocial and prosocial behaviors ( i.e., concurrent validity, convergent, and discriminant validity)

National Institutes of Health June 2018- September 2021

Helped write and edit detailed exosome and protein extraction protocols from peripheral blood, saliva, and sweat patches.

Helped write sections of an NIH intramural grant proposal; I was responsible for the abbreviations, literature review, and introduction.

Contributed to writing and editing the introduction, results, and conclusion for two published peer-reviewed manuscripts and replied to reviewer comments after initial submission to journals.

Trained in using structured interviews for research protocols, such as the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID).

Observed neurologist and researcher Dr. Turtzo and research nurse Mary Ley intake clinical study participants, reviewed their medical and psychiatric history, and performed assessments to measure neurological functioning.

Entered data from Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID) given to participants.

Reviewed literature and investigated how biomarkers are associated with clinical outcomes of mild traumatic brain injury in addition to psychological variables, including PTSD, depression, and neurological changes following brain trauma.

Analyzed datasets using SPSS to discover if the mechanism of injury made a difference in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) prognosis.

Pre-screened and scheduled study participants.

Maintained and organized biological samples using FreezerPro.

Collected blood and saliva samples, transported them from the medical center to the laboratory, and then processed them per study protocols.

VCU Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology June 2016- June 2017

Principal Investigator: Jill Bettinger, PhD

Supervisor: Laura Mathies, PhD

Employed CRISPR/Cas9 technology to investigate how allelic variation of genes in C. elegans affects acute functional tolerance to ethanol.

Used ImagePro Plus to measure locomotion of C.elegans during behavioral assays.

Breed and cared for C.elegans by culturing e. Coli colonies for feeding, picking, and separating C.elegans by developmental phase across the lifespan (L1-L4).

Performed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify nucleotide changes during CRISPR/CAS9 protocol.

VCU Department of Social Psychology Cross-Domain Relationship Lab January 2015-May 2016

Principle Investigator/Supervisor: Charles C. Calderwood, PhD

Conducted research on meta-analyses of psychological detachment, task performance, well-being, and social behaviors.

Investigated areas of industrial/organizational psychology focused on psychological detachment, task performance, and its association with well-being and social behaviors.

Coded study variables into SPSS

Investigated how post-work activities (psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery, and control over leisure time) were predictive of self-reported sleep quality in college students who work part-time.

Examined how demands and resources in both the work and school domains influence student well-being and performance.

Coded data from video-based research investigating technology usage and performance of college students.

Recruited study participants and trained individuals in the lab as needed.

Independent Study

Spit for Science Lab, VCU Department of Psychology January 2017- May 2017

Principal Investigator: Danielle Dick, Ph.D.

Supervisor: Amy Adkins, Ph.D.

Completed independent gene association study of GLP1R and alcohol-related phenotypes: alcohol consumption, DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder Symptomology, and level of response to alcohol, using longitudinal data from Spit for Science.

Analyzed dataset using PLINK, METAL, and SPSS with supervision.

Cross-Domain Relationship, VCU Department of Psychology Lab January 2016-May 2016

Principal Investigator & Supervisor: Charles C. Calderwood, Ph.D.

Studied and presented findings to the lab about how ruminations and psychological detachment are associated with caregivers’ task performance.

Wrote a study proposal seeking to investigate how psychological detachment theory applied to informal caregivers’ ability to balance work with at-home caregiving duties.
