PREPARATION
The following five steps are commonly used to prepare for repositioning a resident onto his/her side in bed.
1.Wash your hands and apply the PARC procedure that you learned in Skills Validation #1: Plan, Ask, Respect, and Communicate.
2.Lock the bed wheels and raise the height of the bed to a safe working height. Then, lower the head of the bed to the lowest position.
3.Ensure that all tubing, cords and other medical attachments have adequate slack to allow for repositioning. Move the resident’s bedding as necessary.
4.Prepare the area by removing all obstructions such as furniture or medical equipment.
5.Position a second staff member on the opposite side of the bed, if needed.
PROCEDURE
1.Using a balanced stance, stand at the side of the bed facing the resident. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and one leg a half step back.
2.Ask or assist the resident to cross his/her ankles by bringing his/her far leg toward you.
3.Ask or assist the resident to bring his/her far arm across his/her chest. Based upon the resident’s ability, have him/her reach as far across his/her body as he/she can. If possible, have him/her grasp his/her upper arm. Ensure that the resident’s arm that you are rolling toward will not be pinned underneath his/her body.
4.Place one of your hands on the opposite side of the resident’s hip, and your other hand on the opposite side of the resident’s shoulders.
5.After confirming with the resident that he/she is ready and with the resident’s assistance as much as possible, log roll him/her toward you. Monitor for any pain, discomfort or changes in the resident’s physiological state.
6.Bolster the resident with pillows.
7.Return the bed to its lowest position for resident safety. Ensure the resident can easily reach the call device.
8.Wash your hands.
