I have extensive experience in administrating large number of SQL Servers and databases including installation, configuration, optimization, performance tuning, backup/restoration, log shipping, replication, clustering, partitioning, security administration, database mirroring as well as Always on Replication and encryption of sensitive information.
EXPERIENCE
Database Administrator 4 / Sr. Database Administrator June 2015 – December 2024
Kemper Insurance / American Access, Downers Grove, Illinois
Lead DBA for America Access until the Kemper buyout when I transitioned to the DBA team. My primary responsibilities were to keep the production, QA, staging and development environments of more than 600+ SQL Servers ranging from SQL 2008R2 to SQL 2022 servers with over 5000+ databases ranging in size from 15TB to 100MB, in high transactional environments at peak performance. Installed and configured SQL servers with or without clustering. Tested and migrated on premises databases and servers to Azure using both online and offline methods. Depending on the environment, size of the database and collected performance data resulted in which type of Azure to use, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machine or Azure SQL Database. Due to vendor requirements a couple Azure SQL Databases had to be moved to a Azure SQL Managed Instance. After the buyout by Kemper, all Azure databases had to then moved to AWS cloud servers in an EC2 instance. Migrated on premises servers to AWS cloud servers in an EC2 instance. Used various AWS tools to track and maintain a healthy AWS environment. Performed server type changes and drive space increases to AWS EC2 instances when needed. Implemented SQL 2019 Always on Availability Groups to handle main mission critical databases to provide 24x7 up time environments. Planned and executed routine maintenance plans to keep indexes and statistics at optimum levels. Implemented custom scripts to check server health and activity. Setup Always on Replication between production and reporting servers to keep traffic at a minimum for web facing production databases and perform database maintenance task on a read only node. Developed a replication process using Change data capture to reduce overnight processes. Worked with off shore personal to maintain a 24x7 support for all SQL Servers. Used third party tools and built in SQL DMV and extended events to diagnose issues within SQL. Used SolarWinds Orion and DPA to help monitor and alerting of potential issues. I provided support to all departments within Kemper/American Access by responding to all request in a timely manner. Worked in an on call rotation to deal with incidents and issues that arose. Met our SLA for core business needs by using Service Now to handle user change request and incident management. Provided solutions for security settings and setup database roles to limit access to sensitive data to authorized personal. Worked off hours support for projects or updates to various applications across Kemper to limit downtime during key business hours. Became proficient in various application in Redgate tool belt. We also used Idera Compliance manager to send alerts when highly sensitive data was accessed. Setup different levels of encryption to insure the data couldn't be readily accessible. Transparent data encryption (TDE) was used for on premises database servers to insure database files couldn't be copied and accessed without the proper keys and passwords. Cyberark was used to store all service account and SQL ID's passwords. Collaborated with data analysts and business users to define data needs and translate into actionable insights. Implemented data warehousing solutions to facilitate centralized data storage and analysis. Created and maintained user views and stored procedures to streamline data access and reporting processes. Participated in system design discussions, contributing expertise to ensure database solutions meet user needs. Implemented robust security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access and cyber threats. Monitored system resources, including memory usage, CPU utilization, and disk space, and took corrective action when needed to maintain optimal performance levels. Implemented security measures to protect sensitive data stored in the databases from unauthorized access or manipulation of information.
