Projects

One of the successful projects I am proud of was the 'Health Disparities' project. I initiated this project as the Executive Director of Hope International Health and Human Services. The project aimed to assess the healthcare needs of African immigrant and refugee communities in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. This initiative evolved as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic that was widespread in that community. To undertake the project, a grant proposal was developed and submitted to the Minnesota Department of Health. In response to the proposal, MDH provided funds to implement the project. An assessment tool was developed and used to assess the plight of the target community to implement the project. The result of the assessment indicated that African immigrant and refugee communities were ignorant of the disease of HIV/AIDS, they lacked the knowledge of the disease and majority did not practice safe sex, most were in denial of the existence of the disease. A report was written on the results, and I presented the report at a health disparities conference in Minnesota. The assessment result was eye-opening for the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the vast majority of state officials.

To address the problem, foundations, and MDH provided additional funding to develop aggressive and culturally appropriate health education and promotion materials to combat the further spread of the disease in that community. After this intervention, the spread of the disease decreased.
