Work Experience
CNC Machinist/Operator
Lighthouse Instruments-I had to leave Lighthouse early because of my mom's Alzheimer's disease. - Charlottesville, VA
May 2022 to September 2022
1. Cut on lights and compressor in the morning.
2. Ensure the compressor has filled up the tank before I cut valves on. 3. Start with a drawing and convert it from metric to decimal. 4. Find the specific program for the type of part to be made and the size which is usually in the CNC Lathe Computer.
5. Pick the right program and check it twice to make sure I have the right program. 6. Depending on the size of the product, the feed tube has to be changed or removed. 7. Once the spindle and collet pads have been adjusted to the material size(Delrin) then I install the right size blank material.
8. These jobs are very precise, so I check everything three times to make sure things are safe. 9. I then go to the end of the program and get the load locator in position. 10. Now I can pull the bar stock out to the load locator and double-check everything before I hit the start button.
11. Once I feel everything is safe then I start the program and it has OPT STOPS included so I can clean the tools.
12. After the program is finished then I start the spindle at a slow speed and deburr the OD and ID and the DUS.
13. Once I let my boss inspect the part then I start a new part from a new drawing. Assembler/CNC Machine Operator
Wimberley Inc. - Charlottesville, VA
March 2013 to April 2020
Wimberley makes photography equipment like heads for tripods, lens plates, flash brackets, and other accessories for photography. My job included running a CNC machine, grinding, and sanding aluminum. Other job functions were assembling heads, lens plates, and other photography equipment. I would drive scrap metal to the scrap yard. I work with the CNC Mill changing out tools and setting up the tool offset and the work offset. I was also taught how to change the oil and coolant in the machines. My job was cleaning out the machines and getting them ready for the next job including the offsets and placing the fixture in the machine plus changing the code on the CNC panel. Detailed CNC machine editing and operation:
1. Convert the drawing to decimal.
2. Check Lathe oil and coolant and inspect tools.
3. Check programs for the desired dimensions.
4. Change collet pads and feed tube to support desired material. 5. Installing the correct fixture.
6. Cutting the desired blanks to the correct size. 7. Installing blanks into the fixture.
8. Starting the program.
Editing the Code in CNC Lathe
1. Each block of code on the HL1 and HL2 machine panels show directional movements of the tools in the X and Z axis.
2. During my employment at Wimberley and Lighthouse, I learned how to change values on the CNC Lathe to adjust the size and length of the part.
3. For example, to change the length of a part I check to see which tool is responsible for the cut-off. If the cut-off tool is #10 then to make that cylinder part .05" longer, you would adjust the value in Z on tool #10 by -.05".
4. To change the ID (Inner Diameter) of the part then you can look at the code and find which tool is responsible for cutting the ID. If you wanted to make the ID smaller by .0005" then you adjust the value of the X-axis on tool #6 by adding .0005" to that value. 5. Whether you running a Mill or Lathe the G-code can be adjusted in the X, Y, or Z dimensions depending on which tools are cutting.
Yard work including mowing, trimming, and driving a truck and trailer. Ron's Landscaping - Bristol, VA
January 2002 to September 2012
Mow yards and trim hedges, paint buildings, and plant trees and shrubs. My responsibility was to drive the truck and trailer to the destination. We also worked odd jobs like plumbing and drywall. Loading, Sorting and Driving
UPS - Bristol, VA
July 1991 to March 2001
I started at UPS unloading trailers and after a year I moved up to sorting parcels to their correct trailers. After 10 years I advanced to a UPS driver and it felt like a dream come true. What I did not comprehend was how different it was from part-time work. I had to work twice as hard but at the end of the day, it was quite worth it! I felt like I did something for others and I slept so much better. My driving career was very rewarding but after two years of driving there was a job offer with Ron's Landscaping and the schedule and pay were a better fit for me. The most important concept I learned from UPS was to be on time, productive, and a team player.
