Work Experience

Emergency Room RN

Cayuga Medical Center - Ithaca, NY

October 2021 to Present

Providing primary nursing care to patients of all ages and backgrounds who present to the department In need of emergency healthcare services. I am sa member of the High Performance Code Team, responding and managing Victims of cardiac arrest through out the hospital. The ER is very fast paced and sees large volumes of patients every day.

Many of the patients we care for are critically ill and require advanced skill and procedures for rapid stabilization. We function independently along with groups of predesigned order sets for certain diagnoses such as Rapid Tranquilization Protocol for Combative/ Potential Dangerous patients, Hypotensive Protocols for patients in shock and showing signs of vascular collapse, Sepsis Protocols for suspected life threatening infections, We place large numbers of peripheral IVs and perform numerous venipunctures for lab specimens. Those of us like myself, who have completed competency training, are able to perform arterial sticks for ABGs and Large Volume Lab tests.. I am certified and proficient in obtaining and interpreting 12 lead EKGs. We follow ACLS and PALS Algorithms in the event of a Code. We see a large numbers of drug overdose Victims, Victims with severe penetrating or crushing injuries from mva accidents. We perform rapid yet proficient stabilization procedures for any patient in need. I am currently serving a contract position and would be required to provide a 2 week notice to switch jobs. RN COVID-19 Tester CVS

Pharmaceutical Strategies Staffing - Massachusetts January 2020 to Present

Employed as a POCT Covid-19 tester at CVS in South Riding, VA on a contractual basis with Advanced Pharmaceutical Strategies Nursing Agency. Job duties included: Conducting all activities related to screening patients for Covid-19. Registering patients in EPIC EMR, Verification of patient insurance, POCT specimen collection and processing. Additional responsibilities included maintaining adherence to Infection Control & Lab Processing Requirements as well as maintaining 100% compliance with respect to utilization of correct PPE at all times.

RN Level 3 COVID ICU

SELECT MEDICAL - SPECIALTY ACUTE CARE HOSPITALS - Newport News, VA July 2021 to October 2021

Providing nursing care for patients suffering from severe COVID-19 infection. 95% of the patients required mechanical ventilation and many had critical drips (ie. Levophed) to sustain life. Most patients had complex IV therapy regimens requiring Central Venous Access. I served as a amber of the High Performance Code Team and was in charge of medication administration. I am well versed in current ACLS & PALS Algorithms and function well in Cardiac Arrest situations. We gave multiple blood products, electrolyte runs, inotropic agents, anti-infectives and much more. We started all of our own PIVs and drew our own labs. Our typical nurse to patient ratio was 1:2. Charge Nurse, RN

Coffeewood Correctional Center - Mitchell's, VA

May 2020 to October 2020

Over sight and management of the Medical Unit. This was a Medium Security Prison caring for approximately 1250 inmates. I was responsible for overseeing the LPNs working with me (2-3). I evaluated all sick inmates both new illnesses and those already admitted to our Medical Observation Unit/Infirmary. I made decisions about the type of emergency care needed as well as the need for an inmate to be transferred out via EMS for higher level care or admission to the MOU for monitoring and care. I made emergency calls to the inmate housing units for problems such as chest pain, loss of consciousness and suspected COVID-19. I performed lab testing as needed and administered all injectable medications. My performance was above average during my time at Coffeewood. However, the DOC operates under very strict policies (literally thousands of policies). I could not consistently practice placing DOC SECURITY ABOVE PATIENT CARE. The inmates were patients to me just as patients that were not in a corrections facility. This conflicts with DOC policy which is an absolute. My extreme commitment to my patients above safety measures (placing an inmate with chest pain in 4 point shackles before assessing them), lead to my termination. It was not the right environment for me. RN Special Care Nursery

Fauquier Health System - Warrenton, VA

August 2019 to November 2019

Job Duties: Providing Primary Nursing Care to infants admitted to the Special Care Nursery. Fauquier Hospital houses a 12 bed Level 2 NICU. Infants in the SCN were attended by a rotating group of Pediatric Hospitalist. The Unit was experiencing a severe staffing crisis die to new management.

(No fault of Director- Cheryl Pole ma RN). The crisis was a result of new Corporate Guidelines that placed much stress on the unit. We SCN RN's were responsible to Attend all deliveries and provide initial neonatal RESUSCITATION Measures to whatever extent needed. (We were all NRP's). Additionally, we had to band the infant and parents, obtain foot prints, record all vital statistics, assign Apgar Scores, Administer routine newborn shots and drops (after verifying parental consent). Perform an Admission Assessment, Obtain vs and perform ongoing assessments at 30 min., 1 hour, 2 hour, and 3 hours of life. If infant was stable we could then transfer care to regular floor staff. Otherwise we were required to determine if admission to SCN was warranted and the "Sick Neonate Protocol was launched". Once admitted to the SCN the infant's care was overseen by the Pediatric Hospitalist on call. SCN staff were responsible to obtain all lab samples (venous and arterial). Initiate IVF and medication as ordered. We also initiated respiratory support. The NICU at Fauquier Health only kept infants 35 weeks and beyond. We also did not maintain. Infants requiring anything beyond CPAP. All in all I was concerned the current chaotic flow of the unit would possibly lead to a very unfortunate outcome and I resigned. Susan Norman
