Responsible for the registration of patients, including patient interviews, pre-admissions, and information accuracy.
Registers or Pre-registers all scheduled and/or unscheduled patients for services according to the policies and procedures set up for this purpose.
Obtains bed assignments from Bed Management or the appropriate department. Follows up with the nursing station, keeping patient/family informed when no bed is immediately available. Maintains an awareness of patient level of comfort during wait. Advises the Patient Access Supervisor/ Manager and/or nursing station if the patient is unable to wait.
Notifies nursing units of patients going to rooms, when appropriate.
Obtains patient’s and/or responsible party's signatures on registration forms and issues required information to patients or responsible party concerning consent, privacy and insurance documentation (Medicare, TriCare etc.) as necessary.
May verify insurance coverage and obtain authorization for services requiring pre-certification. Coordinates with patients and scheduling departments to reschedule procedures until authorization or patient payment can be arranged.
May schedule patients for outpatient visits utilizing computerized scheduling programs and ensures proper and timely follow-up on status of all patient referrals. Updates schedule for cancellations, rescheduling, etc., on an ongoing basis.
Prepares documents and/or charts for patient visits. May obtain dictation from current or referring physician. On completion of visit audits charts for physician signatures and other compliance requirements.
