WORK EXPERIENCE:

Dual Medical officer in Emergency Department and General surgery at Okavango Emergency Centre (July 2021 to current date)

Duties and Responsibilities

●Performing initial assessment of patients in the Emergency Department, that is history taking and examination, order initial investigations, review results and formulate management. I discuss with and keep ED lead consultant updated on all cases. I manage cases in a multidisciplinary approach but discussing cases with other specialists. Cases I manage include Upper GI bleeding, Acute abdomen, Appendicitis, Intestinal Obstruction, MI, PE, Stroke, Acute Asthmatic attack, Status epilepticus, Trauma and many others

●Conducting procedures including venipuncture, ABGs, cannulation, wound suturing, POP application, I and D, Excision of skin lesions, Marsupialization, Wound care and Debridement, Reduction and Stabilizations of fractures and many others under local anesthesia or light sedation.

●Discuss cases with relevant specialist and transfer to them for further evaluation and management.

●Performing CPR when the need arises with our team

●Managing emergency cases during medical evacuations of critical patients to tertiary institutions across Botswana and South Africa using our planes.

●Flying into private camps in the Okavango Delta to provide emergency care and rescue using our helicopters.

●Teaching junior colleagues and mentoring their skills.

Duties and responsibilities-

●Participating in ward rounds by updating patient’s notes, conducting requested investigations and procedures and compiling discharge summaries.

●Preparing patients for major surgical operations by obtaining informed consent and performing required investigations whilst keeping surgeons informed.

●Managing post-surgical patients and looking out for any post-surgical complications whilst keeping senior up to date.

●Assisting several major surgical operations including laparotomies for appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, gastric bypass, penetrating abdominal trauma, partial gastrostomies, thyroidectomies, mastectomies and many more.

●Preforming minor surgical procedures under local anesthesia or light sedation under supervision including I and D, wound debridement, wound suturing, intercostal chest drain insertion, skin biopsies, manual vacuum aspiration of the uterus, IUCD insertion, Cervical cerclage, LEEPs, Cervical cancer biopsies and many more.

●Performing major surgical procedures under supervision from consultants and senior registrars including complicated caesarean sections, laparotomies for ectopic pregnancies, laparotomies for ovaria cysts, Bilateral Tubal ligation, laparotomies for pelvic abscesses and hysterectomies amongst others.

●Supervising and teaching junior doctors, medical students and student nurses whilst rotating through the department

●Attending to victims of sexual assault, providing emergency health assistance and also completing medical affidavits for the police.

●Providing cervical cancer screening services, outreaches to remote areas and treatment services including cryotherapy and LEEPs

●Providing family planning services including implant insertions, intra uterine device insertions and BTL.
