Resume July, ****

At my private practice starting in 1980, Eye Healthcare of St Louis, I managed all operations of my private ophthalmology office. During this time I also had many medical condition referrals from Clarkson. They were so happy with my treatment of their referrals that they asked me to become one of the founding partners in about 1984.

After becoming a partner at Clarkson Eyecare, I continued my role as a general ophthalmologist, but I was also a member of the board. I was interested not only in keeping Clarkson as a highly regarded eye care corporation but also worked to benefit the employees as much as possible. I had a very devoted patient following with good rapport and a very positive attitude with all of my patients and employees. Regardless of their religion, race, national origin or sexual orientation, they all received my best expertise and advice. Many of my patients said they wished I could be their internist since I listened to their problems and explained them better. I retired from doing cataract surgery about 10 years ago when I felt that it was no longer very profitable and was done more efficiently by surgeons who have their own surgery centers with dedicated eye assistants.

I have fit contact lenses since I was a resident in ophthalmology at Barnes Eye Clinic. I like the challenge of fitting monovision contacts as well as multifocal and multifocal toric contacts. These are incredibly happy patients! I do very thorough, though efficient exams, often explaining to new patients what I am doing as i exam. They really find that very interesting.

I feel that I am very competent in a variety of positions related to my education in science, patient care from the simple to the very complex, and workplace issues. I enjoy teaching patients and employees, breaking down problems into their simplest parts, and helping them put answers or alternatives into perspective or practice. Patients really appreciate hearing what is wrong with their eye that is causing their symptoms. They like to also hear alternatives to treatment when available. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, gardening, working out at the gym, reading, movies old and new, travel. My travels have helped put my understanding of the peoples of the world and the need to help the less advantaged both here in the States and abroad. It also gives me a better perspective on how and why foreigners react to us as they do. The perennial garden is one of my favorite activities that does require a lot of attention, but it is a work of love and the result is worth the effort. While I do like some pop music, jazz, classical and opera are more in my favor these days. Art has always been a favorite subject. I wanted to be a docent at the St Louis Art Museum for my retirement, but they have had enough staff and have not offered their 2-year class in 6 years. I think I can use my time and skills best in retirement now by helping people in a medical environment.

I retired due to COVID pneumonia resulting in chronic fatigue which lasted for over a year, despite my N-95 mask and limited journeys into the public. Now, 2 years later, my energy is much better, and I would like to spend time with patients again.
