Experience
I used my experiences as a person with autism to empathize with our neurodivergent clients. I worked as a part of a collaborative team to conduct assessments and learn about the clients and their experiences with autism. With that information, I created individual interventions that offered AAC/communication devices and other assistive technologies to translate students needs. I taught their loved ones about the child’s non-verbal communication methods as well. While working with ABA companies and parents alike, I found child advocacy to be the most important part of my work. My own experiences as a person with autism guides my passion to help students with disabilities. I evaluated the students IEPs and assistive technologies with the teachers, and helped them to establish a healthy, engaging learning environment for their neurodivergent students. Then, I built repore with the students to learn about their specific needs. Through those students, I learned more about ASD, ADHD, and learning delays, I sought to incorporate each students sensory needs in the classroom, and encouraged a happy, regulated learning experience. Most days, I worked in the classroom with the students in order to advocate for their immediate needs.
I helped translate the non-verbal communication of three children with autism. By doing so, I advocated for their emotional and physical well-being. I created a healthy learning environment with accommodations unique to the child’s needs. For example, I discussed necessary ADA laws, and each child’s individual communication methods with their teachers. In that process, I ensured that they incorporated resources for the children’s emotional regulation. Through that process, I was thrilled to see their school experiences become more positive and enjoyable.
