Fusion Connect 07/2021 to 10/2021

Power BI Developer and Trainer; Business Intelligence Architect

Integrated Microsoft Business Intelligence Solution

The client, who architects and maintains business internet solutions (SD-WAN, VoIP, unified communications, internet access, secure networking, and more) for businesses of all sizes, had recently begun exploring Power BI, and demos had been well received by management. Various business teams expressed the need for a more formal “kick-start” connecting Power BI dashboards to Salesforce, WorkDay, SolarWinds, and Office 365 (including MS Project Web), among other special projects. The focus was to get as much as possible accomplished on an accumulated “wish list,” within a short time frame (driven by budget and operational constraints).

Project Description:

In getting the various initiatives off the ground, many training needs, and on-the-fly analysis and reporting requirements, were met as they arose, together with the significant focuses of the engagement. These included both the design and development of dashboards and visualizations for several high-visibility areas of the business, including:

SolarWinds Downtime Data Mart Reporting

oInitially connecting to SolarWinds Orion source to perform testing and modeling, the plan shifted to using a Data Mart to accumulate large amounts of Downtime Data

oIncluded the development of a new SQL Server Data Mart (star schema) to accumulate downtime statistics for analysis

oThe client had been limited to 60-days history up to this point, hence analysis had been impaired significantly

oImplementation of Time Intelligence in the Power BI models that sat atop the Data Mart, to allow dramatically more time-based reporting

oRecreation of various existing, as well as creation of new, Dashboard reports in Power BI

Microsoft Project Web (Dataverse connections, etc.) Dashboard with Supporting Reports

Asset Cap Reporting (Labor Costs) Dashboard

Customer Churn Analysis and Reporting (DAX-intensive measures)

Various other operational and financial reports that initially existed solely in Excel

Delivery of hands-on training upon newly created artifacts and templates / training materials to the team for use in on-going maintenance and development of the new Power BI system

Microsoft Power BI, SQL Server 2019, SSRS, SSIS, Salesforce, WorkDay, Office 365, MS Project Web Dataverse, Excel PivotTables (as Export Targets), extract files, and other external data sources, SolarWinds Orion, and various proprietary operational data sources.

Russell Reynolds Associates (New York City, NY) 05/2019 to 08/2019

Supporting Subject Matter Expert and Business Intelligence Architect

Implementation of Power BI and Analysis Services BI Models to support the Employee Satisfaction Survey reporting and analysis system.

Project Description:

Employed Power BI to rapidly prototype / pilot Employee Satisfaction Survey (“ESS”) data model, and to enhance business requirements gathering and satisfaction through iterative cycles, within a mentoring environment.

Primary Project Stakeholder: RRA Human Capital

Employee Satisfaction Survey (“ESS”) was launched three years prior to the engagement and consisted of a detailed set of questions and descriptive comment requirements, distributed to employees worldwide annually.

Prior to this engagement, ESS was manually created and presented annually in Microsoft PowerPoint, then distributed via e-mail to hundreds of executives and employees worldwide via PDF.

ESS was managed by a vendor company, which was responsible for distributing the survey and collecting responses. The vendor provided the analysis to RRA Human Capital, who was then forced to manipulate and produce fixed analysis and reporting for a large audience, ranging from consulting personnel to executive levels.

At the time the engagement began, ESS process faced a number of significant limitations, only a few of which were:

oAn enormous amount of work needed annually to manipulate the data received from the vendor, as the granularity, etc. needed was not provided.

oVendor rounding rules prohibited aggregation and meant months of manual preparation annually to meet requirements.

oESS vendor interaction was consistently time-consuming, as well, particularly when slicing, etc. capability additions / modifications were requested.

oFrequent, post-annual-release requests to Human Capital for more detailed data made ESS practically a fulltime job.

Accomplishments of the Project:

Brought analysis completely internal to RRA and automated its production and distribution.

Gave full access to raw data for Human Capital upon collection with no further “middleman” control.

Provided self-service reporting and collaboration capabilities for organizational consumers (and dramatic reduction in volume of ad-hoc requests).

Mentored and increased capability (and freed time and resources) of Human Capital / IT to:

o Slice data with more granularity and address evolving business requirements.

oFacilitate and control production, presentation and access control of ESS reporting to various levels of management and consultants.

Designed, implemented, and provided knowledge transfer for SSAS (source of analysis and reporting) and Live Connection Power BI reporting to assigned members of the IT team throughout the engagement, including, but not limited to:

oDimensional databases (multiple-sourced Data Marts / Warehouses), together with a corresponding view layer, between OLTPs and Power BI.

oData connections and model design within Power BI.

oPower Query routines, where needed, to perform post-Mart / -Warehouse ETL.

oOngoing emphasis upon established Data Warehouse, SSAS Tabular Database, and Power BI Model Best Practices.

oRegular training in Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) within the context of centralized calculations implemented throughout the SSAS Tabular Database for Power BI and other reporting.

oDesign and implementation / testing of, and training of client personnel upon, Data Visualizations, including online Dashboards and Reports.

SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS Tabular), Microsoft Power BI, Excel PowerPivot and PivotTables, SQL Server 2016, Excel PivotTables; Extract files and other external data sources.

oDimensional databases (multiple-sourced Data Marts / Warehouses), together with a corresponding View Layer, between OLTPs and Power BI.

oData connections and model design within Power BI.

oPower Query routines, where needed, to perform data cleansing, and other, post-Mart / Warehouse ETL.

Provided hands-on training / mentoring with Excel PowerPivot, Power BI, SQL Server 2016, and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), with initial exposure to SSAS Tabular.

Created Relational and Dimensional Models for Proof-of-Concept and Training events.

Provided ongoing emphasis upon established Data Mart / Warehouse and Power BI Model Best Practices.

Mentored, while performing side-by-side hands-on Business Requirements Gathering for, design and implementation of Reporting and Analytics capabilities via Power BI and the Microsoft Integrated BI Solution.

Built, and Trained upon, Data Visualizations, including Dashboards and Reports.

Created, and Trained Power BI Consultants upon, Data Governance and Quality Assurance for Power BI / SSAS Tabular, as well as Data Warehouse / Mart, modeling engagements.

Performed Training in Data Profiling, Data Dictionaries, Business Glossaries, and Data Analysis findings documentation, while supplying supporting templates of each for various client needs.

Performed, for multiple Power BI data models, substantial design and training within Power Query to:

oAlign data element naming and calculations between disparate data sources.

oTroubleshoot the end-to-end BI solution and optimize performance.

Provided support for more advanced Power BI model capabilities (advanced calculations, beyond-textbook approaches to meeting advanced business requirements, etc.).

Piloted ETL processes that were then replicated in the corresponding SSIS routines of the ultimate solutions.
