Description
Students in English I continue to increase and refine their communication skills. Students take their writing through all the steps of the writing process on a regular basis. In addition to planning and drafting, students revise for organization and idea development and edit their papers for clarity and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written English. They practice all forms of writing, including literary, narrative, expository, persuasive, interpretive, analytical, research, and procedural/work related writing. English I students read extensively in multiple genres from world literature. They learn forms and terms associated with selections being read, develop comprehension and vocabulary skills to greater depth and complexity, and analyze elements of text for greater understanding and modeling for their own writing.

LATE WORK POLICY (GISD Grading Policies)
Makeup Work and Incomplete Grades Related to an Absence
●Students will be given at least two regularly scheduled class days (A/B) for every day missed to complete the assignments or tests missed after an excused or unexcused absence. An incomplete (I) grade on the nine-week report card may be recorded if the allotted period has not elapsed prior to the end of the nine-week grading period. An incomplete for a nine-week grade must be made up within ten school days, or the actual grade average earned will be recorded.
Late Work Not Related to an Absence
●Students must be given at least one opportunity to submit late work not related to an absence. A maximum of ten points per regularly scheduled class day may be deducted. After two regularly scheduled class days, principals may determine whether or not work will continue to be accepted for a maximum grade of 70.
●Teachers will consistently implement procedures for late work in compliance with this regulation and will communicate the common grading procedures to parents and students in writing as directed by the campus principal.
CELL PHONE POLICY
It is expected that students participate in the class with focused attention. Access to cell phones is a distraction that will keep students from taking full advantage of the class design and could impede success.
●To ensure an optimal learning environment in the Ready Hall, the use of cell phones is strictly prohibited in any classroom. Students are required to place cell phones in the designated storage device in each classroom at the beginning of the period. This policy is non-negotiable and applies to all students.
●If a student is caught with a cell phone during class, they will be required to turn in their phone to the teacher for the remainder of the period. For repeat offenses, a teacher may choose to collect the phone for the remainder of the day.
●In cases of non-compliance, the student will be sent directly to an administrator for further disciplinary measures.
●Students are expected to report to class with a charged chromebook and their charger daily.
●All non instructional items must be placed in the teacher designated area prior to instruction
CHROMEBOOK POLICY
●Check your email frequently. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are receiving emails from your instructors.
●Unacceptable and Inappropriate Use of Technology Resources. Copied from the Garland ISD Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. Students are prohibited from possessing, sending, forwarding, posting, accessing, or displaying electronic messages that are abusive, obscene, sexually oriented, threatening, harassing, damaging to another’s reputation, or illegal. This prohibition also applies to conduct off school property, whether the equipment used to send such messages is district owned or personally owned, if it results in a substantial disruption to the educational environment. Any person taking, disseminating, transferring, possessing, or sharing obscene, sexually oriented, lewd, or otherwise illegal images or other content, commonly referred to as “sexting,” will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, may be required to complete an educational program related to the dangers of this type of behavior, and, in certain circumstances, may be reported to law enforcement. Because engaging in this type of behavior can lead to bullying or harassment, as well as possibly impede future endeavors of a student, we encourage you to review with your child http://beforeyoutext.com, a state developed program that addresses the consequences of engaging in inappropriate behavior using technology. In addition, any student who engages in conduct that results in a breach of the district’s computer security will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, and, in some cases, the consequence may rise to the level of expulsion.
