To the
Chancellor
Etobicoke, ON - Ontario
Humber, Canada
Dear Sir/Madam
REF. APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF PROFESSOR, RESEARCH METHODS - FACULTY OF LIBERAL ARTS
& SCIENCES - FT
I do hereby submit my application for the above post in your esteemed University. I have researched and eventually published extensively (over 200 publications in total) on liberal arts and other forms of social and human sciences as in the case of journal articles such as: Diaspora studies, African Indigenous Education, African indigenous technology, African religion and science, Informal African Education, Indigenous African History, Indigenous Religions and indeed completed a PhD in human sciences in South Africa and graduated on 20 April 2007. I have made a broad comparison on liberal arts and human sciences. I am a long serving Senior Lecturer at Kenyatta University, and a visiting Distinguished Professor in Missiology and historiography in the All Nations Christian Church International (ANCCI) University (where I am the Academic Advisor in Kenya and the Program Co-ordinator). I have served Kenyatta University since 2008 and currently serve in the Mombasa Campus Board of Management, as Student Mentor, and as Program Leader in the School of Humanities. I am a globally acknowledged scholar with about 200 publications as refereed journal articles, book chapters, co-authored books, co-edited books, edited books and individually authored books. And who was rated the best researcher/scientist
(Philosophy, History & Theology) in Kenya, after Professor Emeritus Jesse Mugambi, since March 2020 to date, with global h-index 17 and i10-index 38 (in the Google Scholar); and indeed among Africa’s leading scholars in the fields of Philosophy, Oral (indigenous) History, and Theology
(https://www.adscientificindex.com/?tit=History%2C+Philosophy%2C+Theology&con=&country_code=ke&subje ct=). I have also contributed over 100 newspaper articles in the mainstream Kenyan media. With such motivated gentle mien personality, I am convinced that I will be critical in promoting research and quality leadership in your emerging University, and team up with others to catapult it to the mountain tops of human progress. I have been lecturing since 1999, at St Andrew’s College, Kabare-Kirinyaga (1999-2000), BHI College of Theology and Development, Mombasa (2001-to date) though as adjunct lecturer. I published my first book in 2001, The Truth About African Hospitality: Is there hope for Africa? – and got the impetus to research more and publish extensively. Another book, among others, was done in 2017 with Evangel publishers is entitled: Beyond Mount Kenya Region: 40 Years of Theological and Practical Education at St. Andrew’s College, Kabare (1977-2017). I have the necessary experiences and wherewithal to serve in the position applied for as I am conversant with the happenings in both the private and public universities. As a team player with good interpersonal and effective communication, I am deeply convinced that I am able to not only embrace the values of your University, the sponsor, but also employ all the 9 skills and competences noted in the call for application, including prudent management of the University resources.
I am a holder of three PhDs (Religion/theology), Oral (indigenous) History, and a PhD in Educational leadership and administration. I am a holder of 2 Masters Degrees - MSC Education and Master of Theology (Religion), a Bachelor's degree (Divinity, St. Paul’s) and 2 Diplomas (one in Education and another in Religion/theology from a credible institution. I have been lecturing at Kenyatta University, Mombasa Campus, and Student Mentor since 2008 to date. I have valid certificates of good conduct, I am computer literate, I have exemplary teaching and general work performance and I have documents to prove all this. Additionally, I am one of Africa’s most prolific writers in matters regarding Education, Religious/theological Education, historical education, and sociologies of education.
I graduated with my first PhD in theological (religion/philosophy) studies on 20 April 2007 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus, South Africa. I then completed two other PhDs (Educational 2
Management, 2018) and History (2015). I have also completed a Diploma in Education and a Master of Science in Education (Teacher Leadership, Walden University). As noted above, I joined Kenyatta University as, a lecturer in 2008, where I have taken administrative duties as Program Leader, School of Humanity and Social Sciences in Mombasa Campus, and a Student Mentor since 2008 to date. I have participated as a speaker over 20 academic conferences as my CV attests. I have also undertaken more than 10 academic researches including the One Hundred Years of Christianity in Mbeereland of Embu County where I was awarded Ksh 600, 000 by the Mbeere Anglican Diocese in March 2019. Since 2014, I have been awarded 6 small grants, totaling $ 27, 500, to pursue various researches. In regard to publications, I have successfully researched and published about 100 articles in refereed journals, authored 25 book chapters and individually authored and co-authored 11 books since 2014. My consultancy services have been felt locally as the Board Chairman of Canon Njumbi Secondary School, as Director of a Civic Body (Mashinani Uwezesho Program of East Africa), as Editor-in-chief of an international journal (Jumuga Journal of Oral Studies, and Human Sciences), and as a Youth Counsellor. My being invited to research and publish anniversary books such as St Andrew’s College, Kabare, and the Mbeereland Anglican mission has greatly helped me to plough back to society as I grow in scholarship. Further, my current researches on Pentecostalism in Kenya has helped me to understand religious anthropology in Kenya. I am a member of 5 professional societies globally. Such includes the Church History Society of Southern Africa, which will host me in August 2019; Oral History Society of Southern Africa, the Kenya Nonfiction and Academic Authors’ Association (KENFAA), and EATWOT among others. I have collaborated and networked globally via joint researches and publications and my current status as Research Fellow at the University of South Africa (UNISA) further attests to this. My networking is further attested by my being a member of Editorial Board for 3 academic journals abroad, my being an external examiner in Garissa University, Pwani University, KwaZulu-Natal, UNISA among others as my CV shows. Being requested to peer-review over 30 journals in the last 5 years is indeed a pointer to a professional networking and a broad base in consultations. The quality of my teaching prowess, learning and mentorship is clearly affirmed by my passion for studies that culminated into completing a second PhD (History) in late 2014, a second Masters (MSC Education, Teacher Leadership) even when my background was in philosophy and religion; Undertaking a Diploma in Education Management (KEMI), and undertaking a third PhD
(Educational Leadership), noted above. The student-lecturer evaluations have always given me 90% and above, while my mentored students and junior staff have made it to higher heights of academic progress (with two being promoted to the posts of Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, College Principals and so on). I have also published a book on Introduction to Psychology, among others, whose prior research has acted as a critical way of understanding human psychology (2011). My 2016 publication on Leadership Management in the educational sector is a big boost towards this quest for this advertised post of leading the Pan Africa Christian University, as theory and practice goes hand-in-hand.
Regarding evidence of ongoing Supervisions, I have successfully supervised more than 12 PhD candidates since 2008; from Kenya, South Africa, and USA, three of whom are from ANCCI University candidates who graduated on 3 June 2022 (Geoffrey Njogu, Joyce Karuri & Naftaly Mburugu). I have also examined 13 Doctoral degrees from Kenya, USA and South Africa. I have also supervised successfully a dozen Master’s candidates, two of whom, from the American based University, ANCCI, (Hellen Kiarie & Dorcas Mwangi), graduated on 3 June 2022. Other PhDs that I have successfully supervised include: Peggy Mulambya (2014), Nthukah (October 2014), Kabaiku (September 2017), Esther Mwaura (March 2018), and John Wega who was assigned to me by Middlesex University, UK, since 2014, is completing this year, 2022. Equally, I have also supervised other MA students who include Njue
(December 2015), Okonjo (December 2015), Njogu (September 2016), Karuru (April 2018), and Elizabeth Muriithi
(August 2018), among others. There are also a couple of candidates for both PhD and Master’s programs who are under my supervision, as my detailed CV and some limited attachment shows. 3
I have a minimum of 16 years at Kenyatta University as a senior lecturer and a visiting distinguished professor abroad; and have taken Administrative duties such as Programme Leader of the School of Humanities, School Mentor, Acting-School Co-ordinator since 2010. My superior research and scholarly skills in educational matters is clear right from a simple web search. In other words, I am one of the most prolific scholars in Africa today with over 200 publications. Having mentored both undergraduate and postgraduate students, especially in matters to do with research, I have the relevant instructional understanding of teaching, research, and creative needs of learners in the liberal arts. As I noted earlier, I have successfully obtained research grants since 2014, totaling about $27, 500, so as to pursue various educational researches. I have substantial experience with budget management, faculty and staff development, and promoting College and community relations – an experience gained as a member of the Board of Management that runs Kenyatta University, Mombasa Campus, in coordinating ANCCI University, and through my previous activities as the Director of Education in Kenya, for the Anglican Church. Based on my researches that began in 2005, I have the right qualification to take the above advertised position of Assistant Professor of Indigenous Studies as I covered it heavily in my book: Home-Grown Religions of the World (2016). Certainly, African religion goes hand-in-hand with religious indigeneity where dances become part of religio-cultural identities, especially with reference to Africa. Given a chance, I am ready to relocate to your prestigious university which has a huge impact on my former lecturers in Kenya who are its former students.
Regards
Julius Gathogo, PhD, Senior Lecturer Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of KU & Distinguished Professor of Oral [indigenous] and Mission and History of ANCCI University, c/o.
