Mr. Sommers and his associates settled a class action law suit for employees of a single IHOP franchise for $650,000. SELG has also partnered with SEIU Local 1021 by being lead negotiator on the union's behalf for collective bargaining agreements with area municipalities, including Hayward CA where Mr. Sommers and his team challenged the City of Hayward in the Public Employees Relations Board successfully challenging the City’s imposition of bargaining terms. Mr. Sommers was one of the youngest regional directors for the national consumer and environmental organization, Citizen Action. Mr. Sommers operated the door-to-door political canvass, coordinating lobbying efforts, and developing issue campaigns. National Labor Relations Board (2002 – 2002) Washington, DC Law Clerk to Chairman John C. Truesdale

While a law student, Mr. Sommers was law clerk to John C. Truesdale, the Chairperson of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Mr. Truesdale was appointed by President Clinton in 1998 where he served the top post until he retired in 2001. Under the guidance of Mr. Truesdale and his staff attorneys, Mr. Sommers researched cases and submitted draft NLRB decisions, advocated the Board for the acceptance of his determination, and made final edits for publication of Board Decisions.

United Mine Workers of America (2000 – 2000) Washington, DC Law Clerk

Mr. Sommers' first legal job was as law clerk in the legal department for the United Mine Workers of America. The United Mine Workers of America holds a special place in American union history as a union that truly believes in membership democracy. The summer that Mr. Sommers worked for the UMWA, every person working the national headquarters were former miners, with the exception of the administrative and legal staff. One of the many legal projects Mr. Sommers worked on while with the UMWA was to create new labor law on Native American Reservations so that miners working in mines on those reservations could organize into a union. Mr. Sommers was a union organizer for the UE, working in remote communities throughout the United States, encouraging workers to join together and fight for fairness on the job. United States Peace Corps - Chad, Africa (1990 - 1991) Volunteer

Mr. Sommers was a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad, which lies in the heart of Central Africa, between the Darfur region of the Sudan, Libya, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Central African Republic. Mr. Sommers was posted in Mao, a village in the Saharan Desert, where he helped locals develop cheap and efficient freshwater pump technology for fresh drinking water. The Peace Corps was a defining time in Mr. Sommers' life, where he was forced to make it on his own, in a dangerous and difficult area of the world. When Mr. Sommers returned to the United States, the Chadian government had just withstood a serious military coup attempt, the second in just under a year. At the time, Chad was selected by National Geographic as the World's Number One Hardship Post with an average life expectancy of 37 years. Education

Summary: Mr. Sommers was a very active undergraduate student, dedicated to his academics, team Lacrosse, concert promotion, and progressive campus politics. He aarned a double-degree in political science and philosophy, leading the honors organizations for both academic departments. Mr. Sommers was the campus concert promoter as chief concert promoter for the Student Union. His real passion was progressive activism. Addressing what he perceived as institutionalized racism at East Carolina University, Mr. Sommers became a board member of Allied Blacks for Leadership and Equality (ABLE). Also, Mr. Sommers founded the Reform Party to gain political power for all underrepresented students. The Reform Party movement left a lasting impact on the campus culture when Mr. Sommers and friends directly addressed the history of racism on campus and the lingering institutional racism, and today ECU students enjoy fuller inclusion, freedom, acceptance, and diversity. Stephen Sommers has been actively engaged with the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) throughout his legal career. He was the ALRP Attorney of the Year in 2008 and has received the Hero Award from ALRP every year until 2015, when Mr. Sommers, for health reasons, ceased litigating for several years.
