Site Supervisor of Security
Rohm and Haas Co. Research Laboratories, Spring House, PA
Senior Scientist, Coatings Research, Exploratory Rheology Modifiers
Oversaw daily paint preparation and application testing of many latex and gloss enamel binders, placing same on exposure for long term durability testing.
Successfully developed Acrylic Urethane AU-608 as superior commercial offset for General Mills’ G-Cure resin, today, the AU-608 family continues to be a very profitable benchmark.
Served as a key contributor on team that developed blend-able liquid HASE rheology modifiers offering improved handleability and performance versus conventional cellulosic powder thickeners for interior flat paints.
Rohm and Haas Co. Research Laboratories, Spring House, PA
Senior Scientist, Coatings Research, Acrylic Binders
Played an integral role in the development of several acrylic binders, namely, E-3107 (to reduce wood rot in Scandinavian siding), E-3337 (Akzo-Nobel), E-3406 (PPG), E-3447 (Behr Process), and E-3477 (Offset for UCAR-620).
Trade Sales Coatings, Coatings Research, Acrylic Binders, Exploratory Rheology Modifiers
Senior Scientist
Conducted independent research by identifying/transferring from University of Minnesota to Rohm and Haas, the Ultra-Rapid Freezing technology (URF) for visualizing dispersion morphology via transmission electron microscopy for dramatically improved resolution versus conventional optical microscopy.
Presented URF research paper at symposia in Athens, Greece; Valbonne, France; New Orleans, LA; Hilton Head, SC.
URF paper (from Greece) published in the journal Progress Organic Coatings, 22 (1993) 201-210.
Led the development of QR-1241, standalone HEUR thickener for PVAc binders along with QR-1257, another HEUR using alternate capping phobe technology for gloss enamels.
Earned a promotion to Senior Scientist Level 9.
Characterized the preferential partitioning of rheology modifiers to latex, and not continuous phase, as cause of lapping problems.
Leveraged simple yet elegant experiments using sag resistance and viscosity with actual PVC paints, to graphically characterize the partitioning of QR-1241 thickener between latex and continuous phases.
Dramatically improved efficiency and productivity by pasting data electronically into each page by promoting head/footer concept for dated notebook pages. Confirmed the utility of spreadsheets in calculating paint formulations.
Coordinated Bibliographic Retrieval System (BRS) technical database among 10 departments, including the total upload of approximately 15,000 total electronic documents from scanned hardcopies, establishing upload protocol, communicating with departmental editors, and troubleshooting of secretaries’ daily uploads.
