RESEARCH PROFILE

1982: 2nd Year Resident Research; University of Michigan Dept. of Internal Medicine: The Incidence of Neiseria Meningitidis in STD cultures done to rule out Neiseria Gonorrhea in a college student STD clinic at U of Michigan. This study showed that one of the cultures for Neissereia Gonorrhea was actually Neiseria Meningitidis. . This showed that Neisseria Meningitidis may be a sexually transmitted disease.

1987: Substance Abuse Fellow research at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco; Through retroactive chart review at the VA Medical Center -San Francisco I studied the effect of crack cocaine smoking on pulmonary function tests (PFTs). We found that crack cocaine smoking did not effect the DLCO as measured PFTs but if patients had also smoked cigarettes, this effected the DLCO. This study highlighted the difference in damage to the lungs from cigarette smoking vs crack cocaine smoking.

1987: Substance Abuse Fellow research at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco; Phase I trial of sublingual Buprenorphine effect in stopping withdrawal symptoms in methadone maintained patients who had their last dose of methadone 24 hours prior to the study. The study showed the high efficacy of sublingual buprenorphine in stopping opioid withdrawal symptoms. This study lead the way for the DATA 2000 treatment act that allowed a class 3 drug (Buprenorphine) to be used in opioid dependency detoxification and maintenance.

CLINICAL PROFILE

2003: I was in the first cycle of physicians in a training of the trainer certification to teach the pharmacology and appropriate use of Buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder in the U.S,. The course was given by the American Association of Osteopathic Addiction Medicine.

I was one of the first physicians prescribing buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder. I had patients coming to me from across the U.S.

I have been on CBS television national news as an expert on the opioid epidemic as well as providing information to other CBS national programming regarding Vicodin addiction and caffeine addiction.

IMPACT

I was on the front line of opioid dependency treatment from 2003 continuing to today. The lessons that I learned to effectively treat homeless patients in San Francisco and New York City have been useful to help those who have multiple homes. There is a commonality of entitlement, inability to successfully keep their appointments as well as the thinking that having more money (as seen as a wish of the homeless) or having less money (as seen by the multiply homed) will solve their chemical dependency concerns.
