In my many years of technical service I have served in the role of a team player, leader, manager and entrepreneur learning each generation of equipment from analog to digital dealing with camera optics, pneumatics, electrical, electronics, electromechanical, chemical, plumbing, computer, and PLC systems. Troubleshooting is my forte and love the challenge of resolving issues with customers and associates. Looking for a high-tech career until I can retire in about 10 years. I stay very fit physically and mentally so I can enjoy all there is in life.

Authorized to work in the US for any employer

Work Experience

Sr. Field Service Engineer

Alternative Repair Service - Taylor, MI

February 1992 to Present

Worked starting up A.R.S. 32 years ago as Field Engineer and sole proprietor selling and servicing pre- press equipment for the printing, packaging, and graphic arts industries. Started with photo typesetters and cameras which evolved to digital image-setting and scanning equipment. Latest equipment serviced is state of the art computer to plate technology using thermal lasers to image directly to metal plates for offset printing. Also configure and install and troubleshoot RIPS raster image processing equipment. Lead Field Service Engineer

Harris Graphics Pre-press Division - Dayton, OH

1989 to 1990

Worked at Harris Graphics as the liaison to the Belgium company (DISC) who produced image-setter equipment primarily for the packaging industry that we sold and serviced in North, Central and South America. The product was mostly large format drum imagesetters with automated processes using an IBM desktop computer to run using the "C" language. Responsible for preinstallation planning and coordination and doing technical writing to support field engineering team. I was hired to eventually become the service manager which was cut short due to the purchase of the company. I made two trips to attend 9 weeks of training in Belgium and decipher sketchy engineering drawings into useable service bulletins to support the field with information on engineering changes and modifications. When DISC purchased that division of Harris Graphics, they laid off half of the staff including myself. Following that I launched my own independent service company named Alternative Repair Service which is still active but with the printing industry in a severe decline I am looking for other challenges to continue working with the latest technology.

Field Service Supervisor

Itek Composition Systems - Cincinnati, OH

1988 to 1989

Install and service digital phototypesetter systems and film and paper processors. Group leader for Detroit region. Trained new hires on all systems.

Technical Sales Engineer

Anitec Graphics - Cincinnati, OH

1987 to 1988

Provided technical assistance to customers having problems using the Anitec photographic paper, film and chemistry. Travel was required throughout southern Ohio and all of West Virginia. Didn't fit in with the party culture of sales and an alcoholic sales manager and was released after one year of service. That is the only job I was actually fired from and was grateful for that reprieve because I was immediately hired back to Itek without losing any income level due to my long history with Itek as a superior problem solver on all products.

Regional Service Manager

Itek Graphix - Cincinnati, OH

1985 to 1987

Service manager for 10 Field Service Engineers in Detroit, Ohio, and Missouri. Responsible for bottom line P/L and training and hiring staff including a service dispatcher reporting to the Regional Sales Manager. After two years in this position, restructuring the region they eliminated the manager position and changed my role to group leader which I saw as taking a step backwards in my career, so I searched and found another job with Anitec Graphics as a technical sales engineer. Senior Field Service Technician

Itek Graphic Products - Southfield, MI

1978 to 1985

Despite my electronics experience I was hired to service small offset printing presses made by Ryobi which was mostly mechanical. I also learned all the graphic cameras and soon the phototypesetting equipment, Quadritek phototypesetter. Graphic cameras/platemakers evolved from electromechanical to solid state controls and later the typesetters evolved to digital typesetters and later image-setters and plate-setters. I excelled in troubleshooting and soon was promoted to Field Engineer - Group Leader traveling out of state to assist other branches in California, Ohio and Texas with training and problem- solving. I enjoyed the challenge of finding my way to these locations and jumping in to resolve ongoing issues and dealing with very difficult customers who were upset with the performance of their equipment due to poorly trained engineers with poor attitudes. I attended night school and weekend college to complete my bachelor's in General Interdisciplinary Studies to better compete to become a service manager. As a team player I was able to work with underperforming technicians without damaging their egos and getting the results needed for a satisfied customer. Fixed Station Radio/Transmitter Repair Technician

U.S. Army N.A.T.O. Allied Forces Southern Europe. - Naples, Italy 1975 to 1978

After completing 42 weeks of training at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, assigned to Naples, Italy Fleet Broadcast Station where we transmitted voice and teletype signals to SHAPE Belgium and the southern NATO countries and the U.S. Navy Fleet in the Mediterranean. (I possessed a Secret Clearance during that tour of duty) Worked with Army, Airforce and Navy personnel from the United Kingdom, Italy, and the U.S.A. Learning Italian fluently was my goal over the three years serving there but was only able to learn a working knowledge of the language and could interact in the language at will by speaking the language every day with my Italian counterparts. I found great satisfaction in volunteering to sponsor newly assigned service members with families to find a place to live by translating in the Italian language, negotiating for the best prices for their rent. I really enjoyed the culture and people and hope to visit again to see some old friends there.

After one year I became a shift supervisor. Left the military after 6 years to come home to Michigan and find a way to translate my electronics knowledge into a civilian career. I had a short 3-month job fixing dictation machines that I could see was not going to have much of a future because if the repair was over $85 the unit would be scrapped.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in August 1972 and attended Advanced Individual Training in Ft. Gordon, GA and Ft. Polk, LA I was assigned to the 155 Transportation Battalion at Ft. Eustis, VA. During truck driver training I was advanced to assistant instructor based on my driving ability and written test. I also had a perfect score on my Military Occupation Specialty test. I wanted to learn a more technical skill so, I reenlisted for a radio transmitter repair school. Which I also achieved perfect MOS score and at the top of my class.
