Personal Philosophy Statement

Patient care is an intricate system that takes the efforts of many disciplines. The success of the delivery system has to be in sync with those involved in that delivery. It is paramount that the care provided to the client is focused on those we serve. A knowledge of the population we are providing care to is important, as cultural norms and politics will play a huge role. In America a cultural plethora exist, and healthcare workers will have to be sensitive to the needs of these varied communities.

Mental health and treatment and the stigma that exist within it, has pushed me to pursue this area of advanced nursing. In my experiences with working with mental health clients in the emergency department, I find that these clients don’t receive the care that is necessary as opposed to those with common physical health problems. There seems to be an indifference to those suffering from psychiatric issues.

In my profession as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I will be in a position to provide care to many cultures and ethnic groups. I have a duty to understand these cultures and to provide the best care that is possible. There should be no prejudice where care is offered, and the client should be made to feel important where moral outlook is guided. My personal philosophy is to offer the type of care that I myself would want to be afforded. As a healthcare clinician, I feel I have the ability to change the way psychiatric clients are viewed and represented, as well as enhancing care practices in the settings I will serve.
