Verity Packaging, Inc. San Marcos, CA July 2020– Present Started with the company as sole engineering resource, employee #4. Quickly learned and implemented a new cloud based CAD system, Onshape. Set up an internal machine shop with 4 axis lathe, manual mill, manual lathe, etc. Member of core company team including CEO and COO, part of all high level company decisions and direction. In charge of all R&D related activities including: Concept, design, prototype, transfer to production for all internal sustainable packaging products. Products include all metal propel-repel deodorant systems, world’s first all metal personal care dispensing pump, push up deodorant with biodegradable cork. Multiple utility patents pending. Managed a lean team of 3 engineers (2 design, 1 manufacturing), a project manager and a machinist. Led weekly meetings with cross functional departments including company CEO to report progress on all projects. Sought out, set up and approved overseas manufacturing companies based on manufacturing process needs. In charge of patent strategy, budget and patent submissions, working directly with the patent firm. Fluidra North America Carlsbad, CA April 2019 – July 2020 Senior Mechanical engineer on the underwater robotics team. Successfully transferred a pool skimming device from industrial design stage to prototype and testing. Set up and managed all testing relating to flow rate and overall performance with internal laboratory engineers. Created a novel way for the system to stay afloat at varying water levels as well as a mechanical pressure regulating valve for the connecting tube. Reference Patent #US 2021/0277677 A1.

Weekly meetings with the Chinese manufacturing engineering team for status updates on testing, transfer to production, etc. Independently led the R&D effort for advanced materials research to improve the life span of robotic gear trains. Lead engineer on the next generation underwater pool cleaning robot. This was the first tethered (electrically powered) robot for the US team.

Principal Engineer

Ruffy Controls, Inc. Carlsbad, CA July 2014 – April 2019 Started with the company as sole engineering resource to design, develop and bring to market precision human-machine interface controllers. Primary focus was on precision Hall Effect based industrial joysticks. Launched 16 independent product lines which are fully tested, tooled and manufactured in-house. Product lines include over 300 custom designed injection molded parts, 40 custom printed circuit boards, multiple springs (extension, compression, torsion) and machined metal parts.

In charge of all engineering and product development including but not limited to: Initial concept and Solidworks mechanical design

Prototyping, using both in-house 3D printing and fully furnished machine shop: Formally trained by tool makers to use manual lathe, EDM Wire machine, 3 Axis CNC machine and surface grinder. Prototype validation through mechanical and electrical testing, software build & integration if necessary. Direct and manage all electrical and software engineering with outside consultants. Designed and machined all static and dynamic test fixtures including mechanical cycle tester. Setup and manage in-house temperature, humidity testing and IPx7 testing.

Maintain all CAD files to seamlessly transition from prototype to production for all the following types of parts: injection molded plastic, molded silicone rubber, machined and turned metals. Directly transfer files to tool makers and machinists, in-house and contracted (on and offshore). Design and source all mechanical and electrical components for production. Source and maintain relationships with manufacturers (on and offshore) for custom designed springs, printed circuit boards, silicone rubber parts, injection molded parts, labels, cables, wires and other mechanical and electrical hardware. Coordinate all 3 rd party testing at off-site facility to industry EMI/EMC and MIL Spec vibration test standards. Responsible for new product development as well as improving current joystick products with full consideration of ISO phase gate design process and manufacturability. In charge of mechanical design for Pilot Central Control System. Design responsibilities also included sub-systems Decoder Hub & Field Interface. Conceptualized innovative grounding scheme which eventually led to Patent application 13/757,363 filed for “Irrigation Controller with Robust Ground Path” on 2/1/13. Patent granted 11/14/17.

First Response

Co-designed and documented each injection molded part for an ovulation tester and was involved in tooling modifications, etc. In charge of disposable plastic design for the device from concept thru production. Coordinated tooling both locally for initial production run (100k pcs, aluminum tooling) and overseas for full scale, 2 million parts/month production. Entire project lasted a total of 2 years. Advanced Brain Monitoring

Acted as the sole engineering design resource for ABM and was responsible for every phase of the design process, concept through production. Designed disposable sleep apnea guard which was adjustable to fit any human mouth for overnight apnea studies. Also designed many disposable PET flex assemblies, the Sleep Profiler and Night Shift Sleep Profiler products.

RhinoChill

Developed a portable version of the company’s non-invasive intranasal cooling system to be used on ambulances. Prototyped design and took it to a pre-production state until the company secured funding to pull all engineering in house.

Organovo

In charge of design of syringe adapter system for biocompatible 3D printing machine. Conceptualized, prototyped and tested clever adapter mechanism to allow various sized pre-filled syringes be fitted to 3D printer dispensing heads.

Diving Unlimited International

Designed the DUI BlueHeat Smart Battery System for heating drysuits for commercial diving. Battery pack and controllers were tested to survive a marine environment to depths of over 100 ft. Process Engineer

Sumco, Inc. Indianapolis, IN 2005 – 2007

Managed continuous process improvement including plating fixture and equipment design changes using Autodesk Inventor 11 software.

Given direct engineering responsibility for half of the company's precious metal production after less than one year of employment.
