NURSING CAREER

SSM CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER, St. Louis, MO 2000 – 2016

SAFE KIDS COORDINATOR

Driving force in orchestrating the Safe Kids programs & projects, 70+ annual events, outreach to the community, collaboration with action groups, contributions, training & education, and presentations. Also manage data collection and analysis, professional surveys and development of educational materials that result in population-directed needs assessments for community services. Oversee $95K budget, 8 staff and 100 volunteers.

Key Accomplishments:

Grant Programs: Wrote, obtained, and implement 5 current grant projects supporting both durable goods & salaries necessary to implement quality programming. Accountable for management of funds & staff and purchase of products demanded by the programs. Current programs include:

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Grant: This grant primarily supplements the Safe Kids Coordinator salary. Prepare detailed quarterly reports & attend quarterly meetings.

The St. Louis County Department of Health Grant: This funding is specifically used to purchase car seats for St. Louis County residents. Handle all purchases, recordkeeping & monthly reporting.

The Missouri Department of Transportation Grant: Manage 55 outlying departments that provide services in the 6-County service area. Direct staff and purchase necessary products for the program.

Reach Out and Read $90K Grant: Manage Reach Out and Read initiatives at 35 clinic sites that provide books for children and reading services by Site Physicians.

Kohl’s Passenger Safety Program Grant: Provides $117K for Center’s injury prevention programs.

Agency Collaboration: Work closely with more than 50 injury prevention community agencies in a service area that includes St. Louis and St. Louis, Jefferson, Franklin, Washington & St. Charles Counties. Support agency programs with education, certifications and supplies, including distributing 1200 bike helmets to underfunded families as well as education to families with children. As principal liaison with MoDOT Region 6, support child passenger safety by distributing more than 1500 car seats per year to underfunded families between 2013 and 2018.

Community Action Group Involvement: Serve & contribute as member of area committees, including the St. Louis Urban Outreach, the Missouri Violence and Injury Prevention Advisory Committee (MIVPAC), the Health Baby Forum, SSM Advocacy and Safe Routes to School.

St. Louis Urban Outreach: In collaboration with SIDS Resources, provide support for Healthy Baby and Safe to Sleep initiatives, including marketing and fundraising.

Missouri Violence and Injury Prevention Advisory Committee (MIVPAC): Served as Chairperson for this statewide injury and violence prevention initiative. In collaboration with the Saint Louis University School of Public Health, conducted a survey of all school nurses, then analyzed the data and presented it as a resource at the Missouri School Nurse Association Annual Meeting.

Health Baby Forum: Co-Chair for this annual program, whose target population is young African- American women who are pregnant or have infants. Provide in-services and resources that promote healthy babies, with the goal of reducing infant mortality. Host crib classes once a month throughout the year to promote safe sleep; also provide cribs to underfunded new parents.

Safe Routes to School: In collaboration with Safe Kids Worldwide and Trailnet, conduct safe walking programs for 2500 children at 8-10 schools to promote safe & healthy walking/bicycling.

Research Programs: Participate in research initiatives, currently with SIDS Resources and Maryville University, previously with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Safe Kids Worldwide, that produce critical data for evidence-based practices. Collect demographic data from clients supported by the Medical Center; use data in needs assessments to determine distributions, as well as for grant funders.

Book Creation: Wrote & published a book outlining the most common pediatric injuries in Missouri; distribute 15,000 each year. Created this piece to replace multiple handouts normally given to parents.

Compliance: Accurately document all direct/indirect services in compliance with SSM Health Care Systems to protect Medical Center’s non-profit status, as well as meet requirements of Federal pass-through monies.

Presentations: Deliver professional presentations on many topics, including infant safe sleep, child passenger safety and home safety, which not only promote educational opportunities for the participants, but also promote Safe Kids and its association with SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
