Abū Usāma heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “The Jews separated into 71 sects, 70 of which are in the fire; the Christians into 72 sects, 71 of which are in the fire; and this Community (Ummah) will separate into 73 sects, all of them are in the fire except one which will enter Paradise.” We said: “Describe it for us.” He ﷺ said: “As-Sawād al-A’dham (the majority group in Ummah).”

— [Saḥīḥ, al-Haythamī in Majma’ al-Zawā’id; Tabarānī in al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr and al-Awsāt]

“You have to follow the Congregation for verily Allāh will not make the largest group of Muḥammad’s (ﷺ) Community agree on error.”

— [Ibn Abī Shaybah relates it with a sound (Saḥīḥ) chain as ḥadīth #354]

“Allāh will never let my Ummah agree upon misguidance, and the hand (meaning protection) of Allāh is over the group (Jamā’ah), so follow the great mass of believers (As-Sawād al-A’dham), and whoever dissents from them departs to Hell.”

— [Authenticated by Al-Ḥākim (1/116), and al-Dhahabī agreed with him]

“Shaytān is a wolf like the wolf that preys on sheep, taking the isolated and the stray among them; therefore, avoid factionalism and keep to the Congregation and the collective (As-Sawād al-A’dham) and the Masjid.”

— [Aḥmad relates it through Mu’ādh and through Abū Dharr, the two chains being respectively fair (Ḥasan) and sound (Saḥīḥ) according to al-Haythamī in Majma’ al-Zawā’id 6/123]

One must remember Ḥadith of As-Sawād al-A’dham (following the majority) comes from several chains and from which many are Saḥīḥ chains and few Da’īf (weak). So it’s important to be careful because Wahhābīs (Pseudo-Salafīs) misquote and show only Da’īf chains to misguide others when in reality if same words are present in Saḥīḥ chains or Ḥasan ones then it strengthens the Da’īf narrations.

Moreover, this year Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre which is a research center based in Amman, Jordan, published a report called “500: Muslims“ which was done in cooperation with Georgetown University in the United States. In this report they have given an overview of the Muslims in the world and estimates of the quantity of all groups in percentage. This was the result:

81% Ashā’irah & Māturīdiyyah i.e. Traditional Sunnī Islām (Ḥanafīs 45%, Shāfi’īs, 28%, Mālikīs 15%, Ḥanbalīs 2%)

8,55% Shias (Twelvers 8%, Zaidis & Ismailis approx. 0,55%)

0,45% Ibādis

8% Salafīs

1% Ikhwānis

1% Modernists (like Turkish Kemalites)

Another estimate has been shared by the American think tank and independent organization ‘Globalsecurity’ based on the populations in Pakistan and India which are respectively second and third biggest Muslim countries. They concluded there are 50% Barelwīs (synonymous for Sunnī Muslims from the Subcontinent), 20% Deobandīs (Wahhābi-Muqallidīn), 18% Shias, 4% Ahlul Ḥadīth (Wahhābi-Ghayr Muqallidīn), 2% Ismailīs, 2% Qadiy*nīs (non-Muslims) and 4% of other minorities in Pakistan. In India the estimate showed 60-70% Barelwīs!

And before anyone comes and shares verses of Qur’ān which indicate not to make sects then those specific verses are in relation to the Christians and Jews - you can check Tafsīr Jalālayn & Tafsīr ibn Kathīr. Also remember the words of the Prophet ﷺ don’t contradict the Qur’ān, so in light of both we can surely infer; the Muslims as a whole can be a minority religion in the world compared to other faiths like Christianity but by looking at the Muslims only, there is no doubt about the fact that the majority of the Muslims will always be upon the true ‘Aqīdah (creed) till the End Times since the Prophet ﷺ gave us this essential parameter of differentiating between truth and falsehood. Only ill-hearted, wrecked and cultish people would object to the blessed words of the Prophet ﷺ.
