Leading the Department with 8 fellows, 2 PHD’s, 6 attendings and a basic science lab

(The only basic science oncology lab in Brooklyn).

The program is fully accredited for 10 years.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment of the faculty and fellows, recruiting of the new Fellowship program director, applying for the grants, negotiations with the pharmaceutical companies on the contracts, overseeing the infusion unit.

Institutional anticoagulation committee Chair. Mentoring fellows for publications and research, grand rounds in Brookdale University Hospital, Nassau University Hospital, and Jacobi Medical Center, Downstate Medical Center.

Floor rounds and core conferences.

Working on the inter-institutional consortium of oncology programs, part of DSRIP initiative of redesigning health care delivery system in Brooklyn.

Long Island Jewish Health care system. Complex health care environment with majority of patients being underprivileged and underinsured in the middle of one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.

Chief of Hematology & Oncology Division, Department of Internal Medicine

Revitalized struggling Hematology & Oncology Division, which faced potential shut down. Analyzed and evaluated present practices and policies to determine most cost-effective and feasible ways to rejuvenate department operations.

Created a special Palliative Care Team within the hospital combined with North Shore University Palliative Care Team to enable a rotation of a North Shore Fellow in Ethics to Nassau University Medical Center.

Started new Hematology and Oncology Fellowship program.

Chair, Cancer Committee NUMC the program that oversees all cancer-related activities and reports to the American College of Surgeons, we made an impact through this program vital for hospital prestige and for maintaining designation as a Cancer Care Center. We worked on a project of remodeling the Infusion unit, improving reporting to the state of all cancer cases and making cancer care a multidisciplinary task for medical and GYN oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists.

Transfusion Committee Chair at NUMC, So approve blood and blood product transfusions, participate in interdepartmental meetings and interact with transfusion service on the technical component. As a Chair of the transfusion and apheresis committee we worked on an appropriate use of blood products especially for trauma patients and patient for neurosurgery.

Associate Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program Director.

Presbyterian Health care system and Cornell University School of Medicine

Helped with revitalizing of the Oncology program, expanded the Fellowship from 3 to 5 fellows, received grants from NY State for population cancer screening program.

Established Journal clubs and signed an agreement for rotating fellows at Cornell University for Bone marrow transplant rotation.

Passed two ACGME fellowship reviews with 3 and 5 year full accreditations respectively. Three fellows moved on to the bone marrow transplant fellowships. Achieved 100% passing rate on the boards for 7 years in a row.

Assisted Chairman of Medicine in residency and hematology-oncology fellowship review preparation.

The multiple projects as a Chairman of the Performance Improvement Committee in the Brooklyn Hospital Center included reviews of academic programs and interactions between specialties, anticoagulation in orthopedic patients, decreasing readmissions less than 30 days and decreasing the length of stay, surveillance measures in diabetis and decreasing of use of blood products in GI patients, patients with stroke and collecting Press Ganey scores for physicians.
