Xilis, Durham NC 2021-present

Staff Design Engineer

Design of a microfluidics device to encapsulate cancer cells in micro spheres that are 250 microns in diameter. These cancer cells are then passed on to scientists for testing and evaluation. I was responsible for the design of the cooling tower that used a TEC with cooling fans to hold the temperature at 4 degrees Celsius. The cells needed to be kept at 4 degrees Celsius until the generation phase which happened at 37 degrees Celsius which was done with custom designed heater blocks. The sample was then demulsified to remove processing oil and other media was added to the process.

Responsible for design of multiple sub-assemblies at the direction of the technical lead for the project.

Created and maintained the BOM for the device.

Handled the part procurement for all of the components for the prototype and production builds. I was responsible for finding vendors, purchase orders, and tracking parts to assure their timely delivery. There were 200 custom parts and assemblies as well as 150 off the shelf components. I designed multiple custom parts that were machined, made from sheetmetal, 3d printed, and injection molded.

Drawings were created for parts and assemblies. I also created an assembly manual by working with manufacturing and documenting.

Designed special one-off design projects to support other groups in the facility to help process improvement.

Nuvotronics/Cubic, Durham NC 2019-2021

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Module design for miniaturized electronic circuitry. The internal electronics need to be protected from various environmental conditions such as shock, vibration, thermal cycling and electrical interference. These components are used in satellites and earth-based communication links. Other uses include guidance and radar applications. Solidworks is used to apply housing designs with connector choices to meet customer requirements.

Working with the project leader I am responsible for taking the information from the customer requirements, the direction of the lead and creating prototype designs. Once these have been tested and approved the final design is created and put through the release process.

Design of custom components using 3D printing or injection molding for large volume components. Release to vendors for manufacture of the components. Creating purchase orders and finding new vendors. Responsible for delivery of components on time by coordinating with manufacturing to maintain delivery schedule to the customer.

Final assembly drawings and manufacturing documents created for module build.

Design of custom fixturing for manufacturing and testing based on manufacturing requirements.

Special projects including GD&T golden drawing implementation and research on materials and processes to improve products.

INI Power Systems, Morrisville, NC 2019-2019

Mechanical Design Engineer (Contract)

Design of metal and plastic components for the completion of a new generator design. These components included a new impeller design to deliver cooling air for the generator motor, a design to introduce starting fluid into the intake airstream, a heated intake manifold and auxiliary heater for the carburetor. These parts were first 3D printed to confirm fit and functionality and then sent to a vendor for production quantities. Some plastic parts were 3D printed if an application specific material was available.

Research materials to use in a multi fuel environment to protect components against breakdown and corrosion.

Design of a protective shell for the engine control unit along with a heat sink to cool the circuitry held within the container. This electronics package controls the fuel management and adjusts for temperature, humidity, type of fuel and load on the engine. It must be protected from moisture and humidity.

Collaborate with vendors to create prototypes using 3-D printing and prototype machine shops.

Worked with Purchasing to establish vendors for production parts.

3-D parts were designed using Creo 5.

ATI Industrial Automation, Apex, NC 2017 - 2019

Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer, Electrical Modules Group

Electrical Module design experience for robotic end effectors. Using Solidworks to apply housing designs with connector choices to meet customer requirements.

As a project leader responsible for initial design of modules from concept to final build. Customer drawings, specifications, BOM’s and costing provided for customers.

Design of custom components using 3D printing or injection molding for large volume components.

Final assembly drawings and manufacturing documents created for module build.

Internal wiring diagrams produced for customer approval and for manufacturing.

Team lead on module search tool to be used by Engineering, Applications, and Sales to search for best fit module based on size, type, and connector type. This search tool is now used company wide and is being expanded for other component groups using the search techniques I developed for this tool.
