Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:
As a Medical Technologist in the STAT LAB of the Baltimore VA hospital Lab, I perform the following duties on regular basis:
CHEMISTRY : QCS and maintenance are performed on daily basis during night shift. COBAS 8000 with subdivision of e600 and 500c.
Troubleshoot and documents calibration results and other related issues.
Blood gas are process using rapidpoint 500.
MICROBILOGY :Body fluids, gram stains, cell cultures and plate readings are perform as needed.
HEMATOLOGY : Cbcs using beckman coulters, sedrate, cell counts from body fluids, maintainance, stain slides, resulting and calling panic results. Coagulation testing also performed using ACLTOP 500 And many others as needed without and supervision.
• Receives and accessions specimens following established guidelines of the VA hospital.
• Properly identifies, processes, and evaluates specimens for suitability, controlling the physical conditions of the specimen, and performs appropriate laboratory testing and specimen storage based on professional knowledge of specimen types, quality, patient information, and resources available in the laboratory
• Performs maintenance, calibration, review of quality controls and ensures that all laboratory instruments are in good working conditions before use.
• Recognizes testing problems and reacts to indicators of malfunction, locating and implementing appropriate corrections.
• Performs maintenance, calibrations, and quality controls on the instruments
• Reports testing results utilizing the laboratory computer system, calls critical values as outlined in the policy, ensures accurate reporting of testing results, identifies unusual results and discrepancies, correlates test results with other laboratory or patient data, evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system employed and type of specimen, determines if additional data is required before reporting test results, solves problems and presents solutions.
Medical Technologist, working in STAT LAB, the blood banking system., Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and gastric juices.
• Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures.
• Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group, type, and compatibility tests.
• Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
• Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
• Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment (ECHO) and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
• Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
• Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
• Maintains inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
