Buckingham, VA

I volunteer at a therapeutic riding program working with disabled children. The therapeutic riding program is called Heartland Horse Hero's at Sprouse's Corner in Buckingham Va. The disability children has a variety of special needs, anywhere from wheelchaired, autism, down syndrome, non-verbal and learning disability. Our program partners with the Buckingham public school system and we have two different sessions in the spring and fall for these kids, the sessions last for 3 months. We split our time in the classroom learning about the horse parts, how to take of a horse and basic horse needs and then the other time the kids are riding. We usually have 10 kid for each session. I do have some experience working with the teen girls at risk with horse therapy but I am just now starting to really get involved into the program with teens at risk in Buckingham. I started house sitting and pet-sitting for about 3 years now, it started out small with only a few clients but its now growing. I take care of dogs, cats, horses and chickens. My job is either letting the dogs out in there back yards or walking them two-three times a day, feeding the dogs twice a day, give them water. When I take care of the cats, I feed them and give them water, clean there litter boxes once a day. When I take care of the horses, I feed them twice a day, clean there stalls, either keep them in there pasture or put them in there stalls. The chickens I usually collect the eggs, give them fresh water, and give them scraps. When I pet-sit I charge either for the day or overnights. Front Desk Receptionist

I worked with 7 horses everyday, feed them in the am and pm (the horses had several different kind of grain and supplements), clean fields and troughs every other day, cleaned 6 stalls everyday, groom the horses and bathed them, hold horses for farrier and vet. I started out as a volunteer for 2 years before becoming a employee. The facility has over 200 cats and between 45-60 dogs. Cleaned out 4 cat area a day which had 12 cats in the room, gave the kitties food and water every day am and pm, walked about 10 dogs out of 45 dogs each day for exercise and potty breaks, the facility had two big rings that the dogs can run to get there exercise in.
