Training description
The Diplomate national board qualification in Neurosurgery, DNB (Neurosurgery) requires 5 years integrated training in the field of Neurosurgery.
The training is uniformly structured in two parts & the entry into the training programmer is based on competitive national entrance examination.
Fellowship University of Pittsburg ( brain Bypass) Feb 2115.
The training comprises two parts
General Surgery for a period of one year followed by four-year training in general neurosurgery & allied subspecialty.
My training took place in Apollo Hospital Chennai which is one of the national board accredited hospitals.
Apollo group of hospital is tertiary care hospitals in India with branches in major cities across the country.
It has patients across the country and from other countries like Srilanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Mauritius and United Kingdom.
Apollo Chennai has got neurology specialty hospital which is 450 bedded super specialty hospital catering only to people with neurological disorder.
GENERAL SURGERY ROTATION:
I was involved in the emergency & elective general surgery.
During the first 18 months, I worked exclusively on abdominal and gastro Intestinal Surgery particularly Laparoscopy, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, including abdominal Vascular surgery like Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm & aortofemoral bypass etc.
During the latter part of the general surgery training, I have been trained in the vascular surgery particularly Carotid ndarterectomy, preparing A.V. Fistulae for the dialysis patients and regular vascular related work like aorto-femoral bypass for chronic vascular insufficiency.
Apart from the above work I was involved independently as on call resident for General Surgery with frequency of 5 to 6 times week.
NEUROSURGERY ROTATION:
Brief description of Neurosurgery training rotation at Apollo hospital Chennai India.
Neurosurgery department has bed strength of 100, where we have both in patients as well as Neurosurgical emergency and trauma patient
The department has totally 4 units comprises of 4 Consultant Neurosurgeons.
Each unit has 2 to 3 residents at a time and every month the residents are rotated within the units.
During my training I was involved in patient evaluation, clinical presentation and operative exposure involving as a first assistant individually under the guidance of a Consultant Neurosurgeon.
I have got fully trained under Operating Microscope Zeiss.
I have also involved in planning of Stereotactic procedures like biopsy and Craniotomy.
It also includes of a full-fledged X-knife radio surgery unit.
I have got trained about the treatment planning, contouring and radiation dosage planning for AVM, Acoustic Neuroma and Meningioma under the presence of Radiation Oncologist and Physicist.
I have also got exposed to coiling of Aneurysm and embolization of tumor and AVM.
I have undergone an external training program at NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences) at Bangalore for a period of 6 weeks.
The institute is dedicated fully for Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neuropsychiatric services and the only of its kind in the country.
I have maintained procedural log book for the surgical experience I have received during my training & have listed few procedures & operations I am independently carry out is as below.
