WORK EXPERIENCE
Mental Health Tech I/ Activities Coordinator
03/2005 - 08/2013
Southwestern Behavioral Health Center, Lawton, OK United States
I began my mental health career as MHT, was later promoted to a MHT II. After several months as a MHT Il, I was asked to take the position as the Activities Coordinator. My MHT/MHT I duties included ensuring the safety of our clients at all times. I held therapeutic groups for clients daily, working on things like coping skills, establishing healthy boundaries, recognizing uncomfortable circumstances, opening up about feelings as the client became more and more comfortable to do so. I was trained to always pay close attention to detail, while being able to identify and record changes in patient's mood, facial expressions, and overall demeanor. I assisted patients with ADLs, taught basic life skills. Offered encouragement, positive reinforcement, taught self respect and self esteem skills. I later became the Activities Coordinator and held groups daily with clients between the ages of 4-90+ years. I also worked closely with each units treatment planning team to discuss advances & set backs in client's care. Interacted closely with the nursing staff, administration, physicians, and with client's therapist & family. I charted in great detail and changes in client's behavior, as well as the client's reaction to group sessions and any specifics that were needed in assuring client received the best of care. I was certified to teach First Aid & CPR classes to employees. I was also certified to teach CAPE classes, which were utilized for the purpose of therapeutic holds/restraint to ensure the safety of clients and others on the units. I was certified as a Ropes Course Instructor. My responsibilities included the upkeep and maintenance of the facility's rope course. I held therapeutic groups on the ropes course where the focus included building trust, team work, & building confidence. I also interacted with many outside groups, as I marketed for our facility in order to bring outside groups in that included cooperate teams, athletic teams, FFA team members, small business, and even families. The main focus was always trust & team building with these groups. I was also responsible for planning activities to keep the clients busy during down time in the evenings. I often worked closely with the OU nursing program and the Western nursing program when it came to holidays. We often put on carnivals and had Santa deliver presents to each client every year. I also worked closely with groups that brought in therapy animals weekly.
