I have a background, beginning in 2002, in law enforcement, supervising caseloads, and legal research and document production. I have extensive experience working with clients to provide them resources, housing, and employment. I have worked with the courts in Jackson County, Platte County, Clay County, and Cass County. I have been a court officer assigned to work directly with judges, attorneys, and all court personnel. My Master’s Degree is in Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods, and I have done extensive research in dozens of legal, medical, and client-based studies and research. I have experience working as a Paralegal, as a Court Advocate, as a Domestic Violence Instructor, as a Probation and Parole Officer, as a Court officer, as an instructor for the State of Missouri Probation and Parole, Job Coach/Mentor for new staff and Legal Specialist for the Federal Government. I have worked with individuals from all walks of life and my passion is to help individuals turn their lives around and become productive members of society.

EMPLOYMENT*

September 2021 to Present: I am currently a Legal Claims Specialist (BAT) with the Social Security Administration. In my job duties, I review documents submitted by benefit holders requesting feedback on their benefits. The specific areas of research and cases that I process include Social Security Windfall Offset, Government Pension Offset, Disability Cessation, processing overpayment of benefits, recovery of overpaid benefits, and initial benefit award cases. The bulk of my job is spent researching policy, prior case file information, and processing the issues on the cases. This job has allowed me to utilize my Master’s degree in Qualitative and Quantitative Research by researching policies and procedures to process cases. I work with all levels of staff including peers and upper management to process the case correctly and within the allotted time frames. Most of my work is completed independently, and I can process the cases assigned in the needed time frame. I also contact benefit holders with visual impairment issues and update them on their record information including 1099 tax form data and Cost of Living Adjustment data.

January 2013 to September 2021: State of Missouri Probation and Parole. I previously worked in the Violator Unit and served as a Court Liaison for the Sixteenth Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri. I also worked as a Parole Reentry Officer and supervised justice involved individuals returning into the community after extended periods of incarceration. I attended court on a regular basis regarding clients under supervision who have probation and parole violations. It was my responsibility to review files, contact other probation officers, and make recommendations as to sentencing recommendations for the probation and parole clients. I conducted interviews with clients, consulted with judges, and represented the state in court proceedings. I previously worked in the Parole Reentry Program and Department of Justice Parole Mentoring Program and supervised clients recently released from incarceration and assisted in identifying and removing the critical barriers that they faced upon release from prison. The Parole Reentry focus is on reducing and or eliminating barriers that are counterproductive to reintegration following incarceration. In addition, I have worked in the Drug Court Program as well as field work supervision of clients. I was also the Western Region Representative for the Offender’s Offering Alternatives (OOA) Program within the Missouri Department of Corrections. The OOA program exists to provide education for at risk individuals in an effort to deter criminal behavior while emphasizing positive choices and responsibility. In addition, I was the Conflict Resolution Coordinator for my District Office and worked with the Conflict Resolution Center to provide resources, support groups, and provide alternative opportunities to clients in conflict in the community.

October 2012 to January 2013: Hope House. I worked as a Court Advocate for a local domestic violence shelter and assisted women with the completion of ex-parte’s, orders of protection, and provided assistance with obtaining emergency shelter. I also assisted with court advocacy and preparation of court documents to assist clients with various aspects of the legal process.

April 2012 to June 2012: United States Customs and Immigration Services. I worked as a temporary contract Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Paralegal Specialist for the United States government. I processed requests from individuals seeking their case files in accordance with the appropriate exemptions and laws established by the federal government.

May 2011 to December 2011: Northland Dependency Center:/Services in Gladstone, Kansas City, and Independence, Missouri. I previously worked on a part-time basis as an Instructor for the Northland Dependency Center and taught a Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) classes according to the Duluth Model curriculum. The individuals I taught the program to were assigned to complete the program as a contingency of their probation/parole under the Kansas City Municipal Court or Jackson County Circuit Court.

August 2002-May 2011. Jackson County Public Administrators Office. Kansas City, Missouri. I previously worked as a Paralegal for the Jackson County Public Administrator. My responsibilities included drafting petitions/judgments, researching files for trial, and having contact with various government agencies. It was my responsibility to search for family members to serve as guardians/conservators for clients and assist them in the process of obtaining legal counsel to achieve that goal. I was also responsible for drafting various legal documents related to probate and trust law. I also reviewed insurance contracts to determine beneficiary information. On a daily basis, I had extensive contact with outside attorneys, judges, and paralegals. My experiences have also included cross-training in the social work department of the Public Administrator’s Office.

February 2002 - September 2002. James W. Tippin & Associates. Kansas City, Missouri. My position at this firm was as a Paralegal in the area of insurance defense. My responsibilities included drafting petitions, interrogatories, medical authorization forms, and all related documents. I prepared exhibits and organized all documents and cases to prepare for trial and had frequent contact with other attorneys and Courthouse staff.
