WORK EXPERIENCE:

Current work (in KSA):

Now I am working in King AbdulAziz Specialist hospital TAIF /KSA, in which the nuclear medicine unit is part of the radiology department. We used to have a dual head SPECT gamma camera which has been replaced later by SPECT-CT machine. We are capable of doing all the conventional and non-conventional nuclear medicine studies with added CT facility, but due to the presence of a big, active units of renal, endocrine and oncology sections in the hospital, we receive a lot of referrals for thyroid, bone, renal dynamic and static scans together with parathyroid scan.

interestingly we gathered good number of parathyroid adenoma cases. We had a good relation with the neonatology department in the hospital from which we received referrals for renal and HIDA scans mostly (Now they shifted to King Faisal hospital-Taif) . Less frequently we also do lymphoscintigraphy, Mickel's, gastric emptying, GIT bleeding' and HIDA for bile leaks. Radioiodine therapy is given in our unit to hyperthyroid patients referred from endocrine doctors in our hospital and other hospitals. Bone densitometry represents a good share in our routine work as we receive referrals from the hospital and medical centers in Taif as well. And because our hospital is specialist hospital, we receive referrals from other hospitals in Taif and all MOH hospitals in other cities and towns in the

area 300 to 400 kilometers around Taif.

Period from April 2006 till July 2011 (Work in UAE). In this period, I have been working in the department of nuclear medicine - Fujairah hospital, taking the post of specialist as a foreign contract, since I was formerly assessed in the same hospital and was given evaluation by the ministry of health as specialist A.

The nuclear medicine department in Fujairah hospital is the only department of its kind in the whole of the ministry of health, providing service to all of north emirates plus Sharjah and Ajman emirates. It has two SPECT gamma cameras, one of them is new dual head gamma camera upgradeable to SPECT/CT. This department is capable of doing many conventional and sophisticated studies including, thyroid, bone, renal, lung perfusion, HIDA, intestinal bleeding, diverticulum, liver & spleen, myocardial perfusion, MIBG, radio-iodine treatment, etc..

In addition to the routine work in the department, we participate in the academic and CME activities in the hospital and in region.

Period from January to April 2006:

In this period, I worked in the nuclear medicine department of radioisotope center- Khartoum, where we had three gamma cameras, one planar and two dual head SPECT gamma cameras. The department has been

very busy, since it is part of an oncology hospital. It carries all nuclear medicine investigations to cancer patients, and as well it does all other conventional studies, because it serves a wide area in Sudan including the capital.

Period from August 2000 till January 2006

(Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Molecular Biology and Oncology University of Gezira/ Sudan).

This period is regarded as one unit, since; I have been working in the same institute, taking the same post and doing the same job.

Since I joined the Institute in August 2000,

as NM physician and head department of

NM. I decided to work in four domains.

1. Establishing a good NM practice in Sudan.

2. Enlightening the Sudanese doctors and the general public about NM. 3. Increasing the benefit from NM

techniques by the addition of new tests

that can be carried in the department.

4. Addition of new equipment to facilitate work.

To reach the said goals I started by education of the working staff with meetings, lectures and seminars, in that we had an academic program consisting of NM lectures organized weekly.

Also, I used to attach information sheets together with the reports to the referring doctors and deliver some lectures to them during their weekly meetings in hospitals. Then I sent a proposal to the IAEA to organize a national training course for doctors about NM in my center. This was approved by the agency, selecting me as the counterpart of the course and they sent two

experts to conduct lectures with my

participation. It was a very well organized and successful course attended by many doctors from all parts of the wide country, the Sudan, and it has made a great influence on the work in my department as a point of deflection in the history of the institute. We managed to take the consent of the minister

of higher education and the Dean faculty of Medicine, to introduce introductory NM lectures in the syllabus of the faculty of Medicine- University of Gezira, so that the young future doctors get oriented with this modern branch of Medicine, and the lectures gained a great success and acceptance between students.

I added new tests; like radionuclide venography, lymphoscintigraphy, and the dual isotope scanning of the parathyroid gland. I wrote a project to the IAEA named development & upgrading of Nuclear Medicine practice in Gezira, that has been approved with provision of training and equipments including SPECT gamma camera. I made many contacts with other colleagues in many other countries including, South Africa, Syria, India, Egypt, and Pakistan for collaboration and transformation of information about Nuclear Medicine.

I was selected by IAEA to supervise some of the Sudanese students of the DAT program in the AFRA region [(Distance Assistance Training program) in Gezira / Sudan, which is a pilot program governed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aimed at continuous education of Nuclear Medicine technologists], in which they have completed up to the 7th module.

I worked as supervisor of some postgraduate students in the university. I was selected by the ministry of

higher education to be a member of the specialized medical councils in the ministry of health / Sudan representing the NM and Radiotherapy council (see attached documents). In addition to the routine work as nuclear medicine physician and administrative work as head department, I used to deliver lectures about NM in the Faculty of Medicine and faculty of Pharmacy, University of Gezira.

I used to supervise the students in DAT program as mentioned earlier.

Period from 1998 to 2000.

I was selected to join the University as teaching assistant in 1st of August 1998, got scholarship to study in Pakistan for the master degree in Nuclear Medicine, Joined Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) that belongs to Quaidi-Azam university / Islamabad, the most grand and great universities in Pakistan. I studied there for two years from august 1998 till August 2000, completed successfully my study, got the M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Medicine and returned back to Sudan. I worked in the university of Gezira as assistant professor and head departments of Nuclear Medicine in 26th of August 2000.

STUDY IN PAKISTAN:

The study of M.Sc. degree course in Quaidi-Azam university was very hard consisting of weekly exams and quizzes (American syllabus). In addition to the first year of courses, the second year consisted of training attachment, research project and thesis at NORI IslamAbad (Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, and Radiotherapy Institute).

TRAINING AT NORI:

The Nuclear medicine department had two functioning gamma cameras, one planar, and another SPECT camera capable of doing whole body scanning as well, in addition there was an ETT bicycle ergometer for exercise testing of cardiac patients. One "Amershams" radioisotope generator used to be imported weekly. We were supposed to do the daily work of elution, injection of patients, scanning, processing, and reporting. We thus worked in all sections of the department, hot lab, gamma camera, outpatient, and reporting.

At night we were scheduled for night duties to cover the inward patients in the oncological section for possible emergencies that may arise.

I attended some of the workshops organized by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

(PAEC) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about Nuclear Medicine (NM).

Also, I attended some practical sessions on ultrasonography, done by experienced hands of Dr. Ali Nwaz Khan, consultant radiologist, Manchester hospital UK.

Period from 1994 to 1998.

Immediately after graduation from the faculty of Medicine/ Khartoum, I worked in the ministry of health in the period from 1June 1994 to June 1998, first as housemanship period (one year) in different teaching hospitals

including: Wad Medani Teaching Hospital. Sinnar Teaching Hospital. Kosti Teaching Hospital. In this period I have acquired the skills of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics & gynecology.

Then after successful completion of the housemanship period, I worked as a medical officer in the following teaching hospitals:

Wad Medani Pediatric Teaching hospital.

Wad Medani General Teaching hospital. Singa Teaching hospital.

During my work as a medical officer

I was sent to West Bahr Elghazal state in Southern Sudan (before separation) to do the hardship period for six months, In which I got a very good experience in war surgery and treating the diseases common in that region.

Then I returned back to be distributed to work in many Rural hospitals serving health areas for which I was the single doctor. So I gained a good experience in managing health problems caring for both O/P and inward patients, health administration leading the whole health team in the area, and practicing many surgical and obstetrical operations. Then I joined the University of Gezira as a selected registrar.

O/P & EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT.

Routinely, during work in the different hospitals we used to cover the outpatient clinic of the different departments, medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obst. & gynecology, etc... Also, as part of the process we manage the different emergency situations in the respective departments especially cardiac and chest emergencies, appendicitis cases, road traffic accidents, and obstetric bleeding, etc.

During work in south Sudan we used to manage emergencies common at the contact lines in that war area including gunshot wounds, mine and bomb explosions, etc... In rural areas, we worked in single doctor hospitals leading the health team in the health area, managing as routine many emergencies like road traffic accidents, snake bites and scorpion stings, skull injuries, etc….

Period from 1987 to 1994.

(MEDICAL SCHOOL): University of Khartoum, Faculty of Medicine/Sudan

• University of Khartoum as needless to mention, is one of the most grand and well recognized university in the whole of Africa and the Middle East. In which the Faculty of Medicine follows the British system of six years study. I was an active member of the society of health education and medical statistics.

I graduated in May 1994 and obtained the MBBS degree.

DETAILED SCOPE OF WORK:

The NM department is an active one, since in most cases; its the only one of its kind in the area in all hospitals I worked in. It has a hot lab, gamma cameras, radiopharmacy lab, and a medical staff consisting of NM physicians, and a number of technologists. Although 99mTc-pertechnetate was the most commonly used radioisotope but thalium-201, Iodine-131, gallium-67 and other radioisotopes were also in use. We were capable of performing many NM studies, including: Myocardial perfusion imaging. Conventional brain scanning using 99mTc-DTPA.

Thyroid scanning using 99mTc-pertechnetate…

Lung perfusion scanning using 99mTc-MAA. Liver and spleen (Tin colloid/sulphur colloid) scan. HIDA scan.

Renal dynamic scanning using 99mTc-DTPA/

99mTc-MAG3.

Renal captopril studies.

Renal static scanning using 99mTc-DMSA. Bone scintigraphy dynamic & static. Parathyroid scintigraphy using dual and single isotope methods (201T1&99mTc/ 99mTc-sestaMIBI). Gastro-esophageal reflux and gastric emptying studies. Lymphoscintigraphy using

99mTc-nanocolloid Gastro-esophageal reflux and gastric emptying studies. Lymphoscintigraphy using 99mTc-nanocolloid

Others

The daily routine work consists of elution, quality testing, patient reception, clerking, injection, imaging and reporting. Scans are either printed or displayed on the work station.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Since I was working as the single specialist in most of the previous period and the heavy work load, it was difficult to do any research, but in spite of that we conducted research on the pattern of bone metastases of renal tumors in Sudanese patients. In Pakistan I had a research project about comparing the different test modalities in CAD patients, named [Comparison of Different test Modalities in Diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease, ECG, ETT, Rest and Stress Echo, 99mTc MIBI, and Angiography].
