ENGLISH COURSES TAUGHT
ESL Intermediate-High Adult Education English Language Arts: Instruct non-native English speakers in reading, writing, and listening to English via immersion method. Prepare students for community college courses as a bridge. Focus on computer skills, grammar, conventional and casual conversation while crafting resumes and workplace documents. Prepare students for citizenship examination. Noncredit.
ENG 151 – IE & CB Communication Skills I: Instructor enhanced and college bound versions of the regular course that strengthens speaking and writing skills through practical reading, writing, listening, and speaking assignments. Emphasis is placed on the writing of essays, as well as presentation of short speeches - 3 semester credits.
ENG 152 Communication Skills II: A continuation of Communication Skills 1. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of communication skills through group discussion, persuasion, business writing, mass media, and literature - 3 semester credits.
ENG 098 Introduction to College Writing: A composition course focusing on the conventions of academic writing, the composing process, critical thinking, and critical reading. Emphasis is on reading and writing activities that prepare students for successful transition to college writing - 3 non-degree credits.
ENG 204 College Writing: Provides a variety of writing tasks addressing a number of vital ideas and issues based on critical reading and discussion of essays written by influential thinkers such as Niccolò Machiavelli, Martin Luther King Jr., and Virginia Woolf. Students learn to write thoughtful, logical, creative essays while developing editing, critical thinking, peer evaluation, and research skills - 3 semester credits.
ENG 101 College Writing and Critical Reading: A composition course focusing on academic first-year college writing, writing process, research process, MLA format, types of essays, and critical reading. Emphasis on essays that incorporate readings - 3 semester credits.
ENG 100 Developmental Reading & Writing: Emphasizes the improvement of written and verbal vocabularies and reading comprehension. Focuses on the application of English grammar usage to improve writing aptitude - 3 semester credits.
ENG 102 Basic Grammar and Usage: An elementary grammar course that focuses on basic principles of grammar and usage. It is intended for students who would benefit from development of grammar skills, or for students who wish to brush up on their understanding of concepts and terminology. Emphasis is on written communications and proofreading skills - 3 semester credits.
ENG 103 Literature of Civilizations & Worldviews: Provides practice and experience in reading and analyzing three primary genres of literature: fiction, poetry, and drama. The purpose of this course is to enable the student to enjoy and appreciate a wide spectrum of literature, with an understanding of how best to undertake various types of critical analyses of a work - 3 semester credits.
ENG 104 Introduction to Writing: Designed for the student with a good background in writing, focuses on the process of written expression, and gives practice in dealing with the various modes of discourse - 3 semester credits.
ENG 105 Literature: Course that examines genres and forms of writing including short fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction. Students work with both written and oral analysis. Students learn about contemporary techniques of criticism and terminology common to each genre - 3 semester credits.
ENG AL 201 English Language: Accelerated course that examines the basic structure of standard written English and elements of style in written composition. Activities help students gain mastery in the conventions of English usage and apply rhetorical principles in their own reading and writing - 3 semester credits.
ENG 201 - IE English 1: Instructor enhanced course for developmental learners that introduces students to the basic principles of college-level composition, research, critical reading, and critical thinking with an emphasis on academic writing conventions. In addition to examining the content and structure of academic essays, instruction in sentence structure and usage is provided as needed. Written work for this course consists of essays that are expository and analytical in nature. Major attention also is given to the preparation and writing of a research essay through writing assignments that emphasize finding, evaluating, and synthesizing appropriate secondary sources into students’ written work - 3 semester credits.
ENG 202 English 2: Gives students training beyond ENG 201 in advanced composition, research, and critical thinking by reading a selection of literary genres chosen by the instructor. Students will increase understanding and appreciation of the genres by analyzing and writing about prose fiction, drama, and poetry. Writing assignments and essays consist of literary analysis, persuasion, and use of secondary sources. Major attention is given to the preparation and writing of a research essay through writing assignments that emphasize finding, evaluating, and synthesizing appropriate secondary sources into students’ written work - 3 semester credits.
ENG 340 Workplace Communication: Focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing in an employment-related context. In addition, participants in this course will focus on career preparation and develop the interpersonal skills and workplace habits necessary to successfully transition from their role as a student in a vocational – 3 semester credits.
