EXPERIENCE IN RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT OF RESEARCH, GHANA

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

My experience in research covers:

The effect of temperature on the germination of S. hermonthica seed and maize varieties of different endosperm; Growth, gas exchange, and partitioning of dry matter and nitrogen by maize in response to S. hermonthica infection and nitrogen supply.

Partitioning of labelled 13Carbon and 15Nitrogen in a maize-S. hermonthica association; Activities of CO2-fixing enzymes, bundle sheath leakiness, and carbon isotope discrimination in maize in response to S. hermonthica infection and nitrogen supply

Determining optimum time of applying selected herbicides to control an established alfalfa (a perennial legume) sod in no-till maize; The influence of tillage methods on the use of nitrogen by a maize crop after an established alfalfa, Crop management systems for maize following established alfalfa.

Testing the effect of land preparation methods on intercropping and weed control; Evaluating herbicides for the control of noxious weeds such as Rottboelia cochichinensis and Striga hermonthica; Evaluating the effect of nitrogen fertilizers and non-host crops in reducing the level of S. hermonthica infestation; Integrated management of Imperata cylindrica (speargrass) in yam and cassava; Evaluating the effect of nitrogen and potassium on improved cassava varieties; Testing the effect of seed coating and fertilizer on soybean.

Assessing vulnerability and adaptation to climate change

Conservation tillage with herbicides to retain soil moisture, reduce erosion and improve fertility.

Testing of improved maize (early, medium and full season), cowpea (early, medium) and soybean varieties; Determining appropriate planting dates for cowpea and soybean; Evaluating spatial arrangement of component crops and varietal combinations in intercropping; Evaluation of optimum plant density and fertilizer rates for hybrid maize production in farmers’ fields

Design and conduct of surveys of circumstances of farmers, input suppliers, agro-processors, and middlemen or women and how they relate to crop production, processing, storage and marketing using participatory approaches.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER/EXTENSION EXPERIENCE

(i) Development of marketable technologies (e.g. crop varieties)

I was involved in the development of crop varieties and associated agronomic practices through:

Testing of promising maize, cowpea, and soybean varieties on farmers' fields in Ghana to generate data in support of the maize and legume improvement programmes. These data help the commodity programmes to decide whether or not to release particular varieties.

Creating awareness among farmers and farmer based organisations about the existence of these promising varieties and the associated agronomic practices through on-farm tests and field days. The agronomic practices include: spatial arrangement for mono and intercrops, planting densities for mono and intercrops, crop combinations in intercrops, relative times of planting in intercrops, fertiliser recommendations for mono and intercrops, integrated management of speargrass.

Creating awareness among farmers and farmer based organizations about the possibility of reclaiming lands abandoned due to the menace of speargrass with glyphosate and mucuna.

(ii) Organisation of workshops, fora, field and open days

I helped to organise field days to show farmers the differences between improved technologies and the farmers’ practices during the trials and demonstrations conducted on farmers' fields, for maize- and legume-based cropping systems, and integrated management of speargrass in yam and cassava. A minimum of three field days was conducted on each demonstration to show farmers the importance of improved practices such as planting in rows, fertilizer application, insecticide application, selecting good seed for planting, the correct use of glyphosate to control weeds, the effectiveness of mucuna to smother speargrass, foliar fertilisers for producing vegetables.

I was a member of the committee that planned and organized the following Research Staff Association (RSA) National Symposia:

“Managing our environment: CSIR’s involvement and contribution” in Accra and Kumasi on 12 and 26 July 2000, respectively.

“Plinthite: a threat to agriculture in Ghana.” in Accra on 17 July 2003.

Member of the planning committee for the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa, 2002 with the theme “Science and Technology for Health” and sub-theme

“Affordable Housing for Health” at Kumasi on 5 July 2002; and

“Propelling Ghana’s Scientific, Technological and Industrial Growth: the role of the media, financial institutions and government in Accra on 17 July 2002.

I played an active part in the organization of the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th National Maize and Legumes Workshops organized by the Ghana Grains Development Project from 1990 to 1993. I served on the review/editorial and secretariat subcommittees.

(iii) Preparation of Extension Leaflets, Bulletins, Manuals

I have contributed to the preparation of the following extension materials by writing some sections, editing and proof reading of the final drafts of the following materials for Ghana:

Production Guide

A maize and legume production guide

Flipcharts

A good maize harvest, A good cowpea harvest, A good soybean production, Increase your maize yields with fertilizer, Effective weed control in maize and cowpea, Safe uses of pesticides and Post-harvest losses in maize.
