GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT EXPANSION

MD ANDERSON AMBULATORY CLINICAL MEDICAL CENTER

and MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.

The most challenging task while at Walter P. Moore was my involvement in the design and construction administration of the AC Building of the MD Anderson Center, stage 1. This project was delivered using the Design Build method and is located on the Texas Medical Center Campus. It consists of a steel building 7 stories high constructed on five lower concrete floors, 3 of which are underground, totaling over 1.4 million square feet. I designed all steel and concrete columns in the building which included concrete hangers for large areas of a suspended floor. The concrete columns are massive, 48” X 48” on average. Due to the fast pace of this job, I initially designed the columns for gravity loads only. As stability forces became available, I calculated the bending capacity left on the columns using a reverse design approach and compared remaining capacities to the design bending moments. Where remaining capacities were below design moments, I analyzed the concrete rigid frames for moment distribution. Similarly, on the steel columns at times I added moment connections on both sides of the columns to take that moment out of the column that exceeded design. I also designed the steel framing for the penthouses, reinforced concrete beams that were part of a joist floor system and I designed some of the isolated and combined concrete foundations. I created an Excel spread sheet that calculated the load take down of the building. This spread sheet results were use for the design of foundations, columns and PT beams. All Live, Dead and Wind Load Cases were considered as specified per code.

Due to the nature of delivery for this project, the challenge continued right into the construction phase. As the main contact for the construction administration of the project, I faced the task of reviewing construction documents, fulfilling requests for information, problem assessment and solving, client liaison, field inspection, changes implementation, etc. all within the time frame of a very fast paced job. September 2000 – November 2000 STERLING ENGINEERING Houston, TX. Structural Engineer (short term contract)
