Perform an initial evaluation of the animal's condition, clean and wrap wounds, check vital statistics, collect samples, administer medication, perform basic lab work, including urinalysis and blood tests, and assist with procedures such as teeth cleaning. Place and maintain intravenous catheters. Provide recommendations on correct diets for patients dependent on health concerns. Assist veterinarians in the field with diagnostic tests including sedation, radiographs, ultrasounds, equine dentistry, equine gastric scopes, and hoof care. Supervise animal care while veterinarian advises owner on how to maintain care of animals. Maintain appropriate inventory for large animal ambulatory vehicles.
Provide guidance and training to coworkers on large animal medicine including diagnostic tests and handling of horses, goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle. Train coworkers on how to submit laboratory tests for large animals.
