University of Benin Teaching Hospital is a tertiary health facility owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria. This facility has about 1000 beds. Clinical, Training and Research services are provided. Clinical services include emergency room/trauma, consultant out patient’s clinics, wards, renal units, ICU, operating theatre, HRR/IVF units, labor/delivery suite etc. The hospital has various schools of learning such as School of Nursing, School of Midwifery and Post Basic School, Institute of Health Technology, etc.

I worked in accident and emergency room/trauma unit with high level of team work between various professionals. It has about 150 couch bed and a POP room, A & E theatre, A & E pharmacy, Laboratory, X-ray room, CT scan room and record office. Cases handled include asthma crisis, sickle cell in crisis, road transport accidents (RTA), heart failures, burns cases, pulmonary embolism, gunshot injuries, cases of rape and assault etc. Patient cared for are 16 years and above. Nurse to Patient ratio is 1:10.

I worked in the labor/delivery unit which has about 10 delivery, 15 baby cot and theatre attached to it in cases of emergency or caesarean section. It is called labor ward theatre. There is Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) attached to the delivery suite for easy access in cases of babies needed emergency care. Cases cared for include Gestational DM, anemia in pregnancy, malaria in pregnancy, placenta Previa, myomectomy counselling, ANC visits, care for pregnancy induce HTN, etc. Patients cared for are between the ages of 16 and 70 years. Nurse to Patient Ratio is 1:2. Skills:
