Sample Op Ed for Daily News:

With six frenzied years of pumping out untested, “money is no object” initiatives aimed at newborns, toddlers and school children, Mayor de Blasio never misses a chance to promote himself as the champion of young families. Unless the young family has a parent who works for him as a New York City cop.

In that case, expect the Mayor’s pro-family beneficence to instantly disappear. We’ve just finished a long, drawn out--- and victorious-- legal fight against city governance and their full court press against police families.

At issue are the basic bookends of working life—child care and retirement---and city law that was written into the administrative code way back in 1976. It gives a police officer the right to take a year of unpaid leave after the birth or adoption of a child, while continuing to contribute to his or her pension. That means the year is not forfeited and counts in future retirement benefits.

The city was trying damn hard to torpedo the pension credit out of existence for our newer Tier 3 members hired after 2009. Why would the same City Hall that pushes through so many exorbitant “pro-family” experiments oppose such a fundamental need for their own employees? They know we are an economically and ethnically diverse union that includes single parents, two cop families, and officers of every color and background. They know that we are united by the fierce desire to do right by our kids. And they know --- too well--- that our substandard contract places a financial strain on childcare and retirement planning, and this benefit addresses that.

Unfortunately, they also know that as New York City police officers, City Hall’s knee jerk reaction is to devalue us at every turn.

With heartless hypocrisy, and their ever-present bias against cops and the families we care for, the city decided to fight us tooth and nail --- wasting time, energy and taxpayer dollars that could have gone into worthy and pressing municipal concerns.

In 2015, we were forced to launch the lawsuit to get the city to honor the Tier 3 pension buyback provisions for childcare leave that is actually written in the books.

We won that one in New York Supreme Court.

So, the city challenged the ruling in the appellate division in 2017, and got it overturned. Undaunted, we went to the highest court in the state and finally got a decisive and truly final decision in October… ending the five-year fight.

The Court of Appeals sided with the PBA.

The Honorable Eugene Fahey wrote the majority opinion, detailing why the statute can’t simply be ignored for Tier 3 officers.

“That mechanism … was part of a series of pension initiatives intended to ensure that members who became parents and temporarily left service were not pressured to ‘rush back to the workplace without properly caring for their children’”, and later were “not punished in their retirement for their willingness to play an active role in their child’s growth”.

Justice has truly been served. And so has notice that we are in the fight for the long haul--- whenever the rights and benefits of our members come under fire.

LINKEDIN COPY EDITING OF CLIENTS “WAY TOO LONG” AND NON-PROMOTIONAL LINKEDIN POST:

BEFORE- CLIENT POST VERY LONG AND DOESN’T CONNECT BACK TO PRODUCT THE COMPANY IS SELLING:

This past week I had the biggest "win" I have had to date in my recovery.

Over the years, I have developed a debilitating fear of the dentist. After two very painful past experiences, I began to put off necessary dental work -- and there was an awful lot of work that became necessary. Years of abusing my body with drugs and unhealthy eating habits had certainly taken its toll. And I did nothing -- despite knowing that my gum and dental health is connected with heart and brain health; despite knowing I was setting a terrible example for my children by letting fear rule my life; despite knowing I have a family that depends on me and needs me here.

I knew there would be a day of reckoning and that day came Thursday afternoon of last week. I was in excruciating pain that had been slowly building in fits and starts for weeks before coming in suddenly to stay. In that moment, I was tempted to see if I could find opioids. In the past, whenever I experienced pain like this I would reach for a substance.

But, 3.5 years into recovery, I stopped, took a breath, and sat in the discomfort. I chose not to make a call or look in the medicine cabinet. I sat still and did nothing. And then I called the dentist and set an emergency appointment. After making the appointment, I took a walk to distract myself. I called my husband. I talked about what I was feeling.

I didn't realize it at the time, but there is something incredibly empowering about being triggered in such an extreme way, having a choice and means to do the wrong thing, and still choosing to act in a way that is conducive to the life I want to live. Everything in my past had conditioned me to, without thinking, grab for a substance to get relief quickly at any cost. And in the moment, a moment where I was blinded by pain, I still chose something different for myself. Never had my recovery been tested in such an intense way.

Ultimately, having gotten through the weekend with a lot of Tylenol and Advil, I went in for what I thought would be oral surgery Monday midday. It turned out that the infection and inflammation were so severe all they could do was prescribe steroids and antibiotics to get in under control until Friday when I will have one procedure (two root canals) and Tuesday when I will have two extractions.

MY COPY- EDITED VERSION OF OUR CLIENT’S POST-SHORT, TO THE POINT, PROMOTING COMPANY’S PRODUCT: It’s been 3.5 years since I last allowed prescription painkillers into my life, resulting in life ruining addiction. Yet, challenges to my recovery can still pop up in the most mundane, unexpected situations. Like many Americans, I didn’t prioritize my dental care until last week, when a sharp pain that throbbed in my gums sent me seeking root canal – the soonest appointment one week away! I reached out to my loved ones for talk therapy and concrete suggestions, like simply taking a walk. I’ll be okay, and drug free-despite the discomfort- until my dentist rescues me in a few days.

This is why our new easy tech alert system developed by (OUR COMPANY NAME) is so useful for those beginning their recovery journey. A warning signal - from their monitoring wristwatch-alerts family and recovery professionals that something is amiss, and it is time to reach out with immediate healthy strategies or medical intervention.

If you are a facility interested in adding our system to further support your patients and their families - or an investor who wants to learn more - please reach out (link here).
