Abstract of Doctorate Thesis

Exploring The use of Social Media in Higher Education Teaching during the COVID 19 Pandemic: Evidence from Egypt. The problem addressed in this qualitative, multiple case study is that the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to traditional or face-to-face education. As a result, governments have moved all classes from face-to-face (F2F) to on the web and online classes. However, universities in many developing countries, for example, Egypt, lack technological platforms and formal online learning management systems (LMS) to communicate with students and faculty members. Consequently, they do not have the full technological knowledge or capacities to help the Internet learning measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. A few universities have stepped up and recorded their creative efforts to address online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a need for further studies and a comprehensive range of research on Egypt’s higher education response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative, comparative case study with embedded units aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of faculty members (F) and students (S) from different universities and academic institutions in Egypt to further ascertain the overall experiences and perceptions of faculty and students in Egyptian universities on how they leverage social media sites to continue formal learning and academic communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ultimate purpose of this research was to outline and delineate the ideas, opinions, and experience of the case study participants, or embedded units of the two cases, one of the students and one of faculty, on the central topic of the study. The sample was selected using the intentional sampling approach complemented by criterion and snowball sampling. The interviews were performed online using the Zoom application, between October and December 2021. The interview was conducted with 20 participants, ten participants from each of the embedded units of faculty and students in Egyptian universities and supported the study of convergence and divergence of participants’ experiences within and between cases. The participants included 60% males (12) and 40% females (8), with an average age of 32 5, in Cairo, Giza, Helwan, Mansoura, Alexandria, and Upper Egypt. This small number Plans to facilitate

of interviews is acceptable in qualitative studies. Findings reviled that the vast majority of faculty members and students from different universities in Egypt prefer distance education. Furthermore, Egyptian faculty members indicate that many relationships, especially with students, were intertwined and undefined at the beginning of the application of the system, but over time a kind of learning occurred and the experience curve increased on all sides of the educational process. The majority of Egyptian students who participated in this study believe there are many pros for distance education, such as an increase in student technology skills. Furthermore, the study indicates there are many challenges encountered by both, faculty members and students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study findings also indicate that students lost the psychological connection and the human bonds with their faculty members. The study concluded that it is time to accept the fact that faculty and students’ unique needs and perceptions should be recognized because they are becoming the main success factors in higher education institutions worldwide. If properly treated in universities, they can contribute their talents, ambitions, and skills to building more sustainable and competitive higher education.
