Duties on 1A vary depending on which position I am working. As a unit secretary, it is my responsibility to greet and assist any and all guests, assist the charge nurse with the admission/discharge and census to accurately staff and maintain steady flow on our unit. Answer call bells and telephones and direct phone calls to the appropriate staff member. As a CNA my responsibilities include assisting nurses with vital signs, blood glucose testing, EKGs as needed, phlebotomy as needed, ADLs and outstanding customer service to our patients.

On 5B I worked primarily as the unit secretary. Previously a member of 5B unit council and the Patient and Family Centered Care Committee. Tasks included assisting the charge nurse with keeping the floor census. Discharging and admitting patients to the floor. Maintaining the main desk by multi-tasking and assisting on the floor as needed as a CNA. The main duty or purpose of the CS is to provide support to the nursing staff so they are able to be more efficient in patient care. As a CS, I understand I am mostly likely the first/last interaction the patients have on our floor, therefore it is critical to call the patient by their name, not their room number and to greet and discharge with compassion and kindness.
