Volunteer Experience:
Volunteers Around the World (VAW) is a humanitarian organization devoted to improving the standard of living for those that live in some of the most poverty stricken communities of the world. Our focus is to provide communities with access to medical treatment, dental treatment, medication, nutritional security, clean water, and health education. VAW - Medical Outreach provides volunteers with an opportunity to shadow medical professionals, work side by side with experienced doctors and learn about healthcare in a global context. Volunteers accumulated funds to purchase medications and supplies prior to the trip to Vietnam. While in Saigon, volunteers shadowed and assisted the doctors, learned about diagnosing and treating patients, taking patient history, measured vital statistics, learned basic pharmacology and taught public health classes, all under the direct supervision of an experienced local doctor and staff. While volunteering with this amazing group I completed a total of 62 hrs. volunteer and shadow hours with Volunteers Around the World in Vietnam in May 2018. My breakdown of my volunteer experience was preparing vital equipment and medication: 10 hours, performed triage, measure vital statistics, manage the pharmacy: 36 hours, taught public health classes to children: 4 hours and shadowed and assisted doctors: 12 hours
