The difference between management in the nonprofit sector and management in other sectors.
Although it should be obvious to us all that 'management is management' in the sense that efficient day to day operations are required of all organizations, if they are to succeed, Also, it's very important for every business, regardless of sector, to have a sound strategy.
However, a key difference in managing across the sectors will lie in what is the mission and purpose of the organization.
Which stakeholders groups have the most power.
Is their power derived from the organization's formal structure or in the resources the group controls.
The answers to these two questions begin to shape how an organization's leadership approaches management In the private sector does the manage towards the owners interest.
In the non-profit sector does the leader manage towards the more powerful stakehoIlders ' interest.
In the public sector, does the leader manage towards getting re-elected or re- appointed.
Or does the leader always manage towards the organization's best interest – to fuifil its mission and purpose.
These questions present our dilemma and we are challenged to innovate new management models that mitigate some of the risk associated with managing towards stakeholder interest.
The second argument is that accountability differs largely between public and private organizations.
Managers in public organizations are accountable to much greater number of people and in turn as subjected to greater influence by those they are accountable to.
This is will play a significant role in their decision making process as public administration is constantly under public scrutiny.
The public manager will attempt to appease as many people as possible while achieving results This adds to the complexity of their position as manager.
Moreover, research supports the notion that organizational commitment is weaker in the public sector, so this will also influence public managers accountability.
The private sector operates without the checks and balances of the public sector.
They are accountable to shareholders and their focus remains on maximizing the bottom-line.
