Graduated from Newcomb Central School in 1980; Direct Support Aide for over ten years for New York State Capital District D.D.S.O. Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) before moving up to a House Leader supervising a home of individuals and their caretakers. (This position is physically demanding)
Responsibilities as a direct aide include helping individuals with developmental disabilities lead richer lives under supervision by providing supports and services which include, but are not limited to, advocating for, encouraging, guiding, and teaching individuals in expressing personal choice, ensuring the individuals are integrated into their communities, assisting with personal hygiene care, toileting, lifts and transfers, dining, dressing, and meal preparation. I am active in helping the individuals participate in games and recreational programs while coaching and encouraging them to develop daily living skills all while providing a clean, comfortable and safe environment. I also administer and order medications, and work with staff to carry out and record direct care plans.
Responsibilities as a House Leader include, but are not limited to, train staff on Policy and Procedures, Maintain OSHA compliance, track and process medical paperwork (faxing scripts, physician’s orders, correspondence purchase requests, opening and prioritizing mail etc.), scheduling of nineteen staff in a 24/7 house, verify and approved time sheets for staff, maintain staff files (time off requests, licenses, mandated trainings etc.), maintain and update the Emergency personnel listings, assisting with updating and distributing daily reports, maintain e-ledgers, medical appointments for the individuals, staffing for the house’s needs and for meetings, foster a team work environment while encouraging staff members to work to the best of their ability including not only caring for the individuals but also that proper documentation of care and daily goals are completed in full, completing documentation of any suspected abuse, medical orders (or medical order changes), medical administration record documentation. Listen to grievance hearings made by staff members to assist in helping to alleviate any concerns. Verified and monitored vehicle maintenance records, maintained inventory and requisitioned office supplies for the house, put in work orders to maintain a safe living environment for the individuals, and kept up on light housekeeping.
