PRESENTLY RETIRED

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:

My background includes broad experience and a variety of duties. During my formal employment these duties focused on communication, both written (by post and e-mail) and oral (in person and by phone), as well as editing articles and books for publication. I was also responsible for making air and hotel reservations for a Full Professor in the Medical School at UCSD, as well as all travel arrangements for my husband and myself. So far, those arrangements have included numerous cruises, as well as considerable land-based travel, both privately and with tour companies. I now prefer to make my reservations directly with the company, but the owner of a travel agency that previously handled our cruise reservations was sufficiently impressed with my attention to detail and my enthusiasm, that she recommended me for full time employment as a travel agent, but the logistics of the job did not fit at the time.

I am quite experienced with word processing and e-mail. I have also been introduced to other computer applications relevant to this position and believe I could quicky become proficient in them.

Having spent several years in an academic setting, I have interacted with a wide range of people: students, professors, publishers, vendors, business people, government agents, etc., from the U.S. and several foreign countries. Sadly, I cannot claim to be bilingual, but I do have some Spanish and some French, as well as a mastery of polite expressions in German. I have been fortunate to travel extensively to and in many countries: England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Japan, China, Kenya, Tanzania, and most Central American counties, as well as cruise (only) travel to most South American countries.

My husband and I also own a condominium in Mexico. We have traveled extensively in that country, and I try to remain current on the state of things, particularly as regards health, crime, and the economy in the state of Quintana Rue, as our condominium is 90 miles south of Cancun. Because of my husbands passion for all things Maya, I have visited every major archeological site in the Yucatan of Mexico, and in Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala. I have interacted extensively with native Maya people, and I have a fair amount of insight into the arts and culture of these people, as well as general societal interactions in Mexico.

OBJECTIVE:

I am applying for this position because of my enthusiasm for travel, and the logistical ease of a part-time, remote position, as well as the convenience of having some supplemental income and the opportunity for free or discounted travel. I do not have to have a job, or the accompanying fringe benefits, as my retirement plan provides for my health insurance, etc.

I believe I am an excellent fit for this position, because of my education, travel experience, enthusiasm, and aptitude. My communication skills are excellent, and I genuinely look forward to working with people who are interested in travel, particularly cruising, and being able to help them realize their dream.
