Obtained biospecimens of esophageal tissue previously taken via endoscopy of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and no disease (normal controls)

Identified several proteins located at the tight junction (TJ) of mucosal cells

Processed biopsies and then performed immunostaining assays directed at the TJ proteins

Utilized electron microscopy and histology to identify location, distribution and density of TJ proteins

Used semi-quantitative scale to categorize different levels of staining of tissue samples
