Planning for the Library
In the library each book would need a stamp to identify it. The stamp is usually in the front or back of the book. If lost or stolen the book can be returned to the proper owner. What would the stamp say?
This is the property of KIPP PEACE
This books belongs to KIPP PEACE, Public School
This book is from the library of KIPP PEACE
(Ink stamps range in prices from $6.99 to $33.99 depending on the design with 3 to 4 lines) This price check came from Office Depot- I would love to have a round stamp to represent the PEACE logo of the earth. I would love for the stamp to be green because it represents school‘s logo. There will need to be an inventory list of every book in the library. Keeping an accurate list will allow one to know how many books are lost or need to be replaced. Library skills I would like to teach:
How the library is organized
How the Dewey decimal system is used:
(discuss and explain that it has the alphabet like in reading)
(discuss and explain that it has numbers like in math)
(show a hard copy of the Dewey decimal system)
(show hard copies of the various books to be found in the library)
Name the parts of a book:
explain there are only two kinds of book: non-fiction (real life fiction- make-believe or fantasy
all books have a title
Explain what an illustrator is
Explain what an author is
Explain the characters in a story
Explain the setting in a story
Explain the plot in a story
Explain the conclusion in a story
Explain that each page has numbers, like in math
Explain that sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period
I would like to have the alphabet posted like the colors in Open Court- vowels-red; consonants-black
Explain that books are made up of words and pictures
Explain what is a prefix and suffix
These library skills can be taught to lower school and could be shared with upper school. Library skills for upper school could consist of:
What is a table of content
What is an appendix
What is a narrative
What is the difference between an autobiography and biography
What is an index
What is a magazine
What is a newspaper
What is a classified ad or newspaper
What is a current event article
What is the difference between a subscription and prescription
What is a poem
What is Japan Haiku 5-7-5
Discuss the parts of a letter (write one, address an envelope)
Discuss the parts of a written paper or essay
Teach how to use test strategies for assessments
Introduce blends example-bl,br,cl,cr,etc
Discuss famous African American in literature
Discuss famous Latinos in literature
Complete book reports on their assigned library book
Read to upper school and lower school
Make book markers
What is a glossary
Discuss the various parts of writing:
1. argumentative
2. persuasive
3. narrative
4. expository
5. analytical
What is an opinion
What is a fact
How will the books be checked out from the library? Mrs. Courtney and I have discussed creating a spreadsheet with the homeroom teacher’s name and classroom roster. Listed before is a sample of a hard copy to be completed by each student whenever they check out books from the library, this information will be entered onto the spread sheet. LIBRARY DATA SHEET
DATE
TEACHER’S
NAME STUDENT’S
NAME THE NAME OF YOUR BOOK
1) 2) 3) 4) This data sheet will have the same information on the back. I plan to use the same sheet for about 2 to three months, depending on the scheduled library time. This sheet will also serve as my backup sheet for data.
HOW THE LIBRARY WILL BE ORGANIZED
I called all of the Teacher Supply stores in the Houston area, no one is familiar with the Dewey Decimal System. When I looked on Amazon or on-line I was given a decimal math placement sheet. I continued to call various public libraries in the Houston and surrounding areas. I was informed that the Dewey Decimal System continues to be used in the library, but when I called Half Price Book Store and asked how does this store inventory their books?. I was informed that the Dewey Decimal System is not used but books are put in order using the author’s last name or the subject of the book. BOOKS IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER ACCORDING TO THE
