QUALIFICATIONS

In Metallurgy Research – A 1st year graduate student finished a post-doc's work he could not resolve during his 5-year tenure in PhD research. I was able to successfully characterize the effect of carbon on the loss of room-temperature damping capacity in copper-manganese alloys within the 1st 6-month of my graduate study in Metallurgical Engineering.

In Piezoelectricity Field – My outstanding PhD work brought forth a quantitative relaxation time spectrum model for piezoelectric materials which the scientific community could not resolve beyond the qualitative description in literature for more than a decade.

In Hard Disk Drive Industry – I once saved company Seagate at the 11th hour for an unexpected quality issue which would otherwise cost > hundreds of million US dollars if unresolved. (Please see the attached supplementary doc for details.)

In Data Tool Automation & Integration – During my 23-year+ tenure in Seagate, I have developed numerous integrated handy tools that automated and simplified the lengthy and complicated data retrieval & statistical analysis processes from several days/weeks to seconds/hours.

In Big Data Machine Learning Development – Pioneered and architected designs of Seagate's 1st Big Data Analytics organization in the spectrum of Advanced Data Analytics, Open Source R/Python/Knime, Hadoop system, and Data Flow integrations. Conducted Citizen Data Science workshops at every Seagate site (US, Europe & Asia). Equipped and trained more than 350 Seagate engineers and data analysts with in-depth data science skills and practices.

In Company Seagate – I have earned a reputation of being innovative, efficient, reliable and hard-working. A technical consulting point of Advanced Data Analytics community. Nicknamed as JMP Guru & Data Wizard. Also a recipient of Highest Seagate Rating (5, Outstanding) on focal reviews for 6 straight years. Key Employee Bonus receiver whenever funded. Impressed colleagues with my Taiwanese background with pride.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Sr. Staff Engineer / Data Scientist: July 1999 – present

Seagate Technology, Product Performance Engineering/Tools Development & Big Data Analytics/Supply Chain/Reliability/Could Big Data/Firmware Development Data Analytics, Bloomington, MN (1999-2005); Longmont, CO (2005-present)

Hailed as Hero of Rescue Mission (see attached LCO Site VP’s monthly communication memo, "Longmont Imperatives, "Message from Jeff Mason 3/24/2010). My mission ended up in salvaging and securing the shipment of tens of millions of Seagate drives to our key customers. Led the team of 10 engineers to develop an automated monitoring analytic tool to ensure similar crisis will never happen again.

Author and Developer of many Integrated Data tools:

DIDA (Drive Integrated Data Assembler), e.g. was #1 rated, most user-friendly, easiest, and robust drive parametric data querying tool, which supports hundreds of users Seagate worldwide.

Author and Developer of CM Load analytical tool:

An indispensable tool that helped FW development in the time of Gemini Control Module overloading crisis for 10- & 12-head / 60~250-zone products (Makara and beyond) development.

It now becomes a gold standard analytical tool for monitoring CM Load in LCO.

Management’s right-hand man on providing complex data analysis needs whenever arrived:

Conducted a full cycle of Makara Gauge R & R study from cradle (test planning, statistical analysis code development, coordination of FW test process, FA works) to finish (comprehensive data analysis, and data package presentation). Due to my statistical expertise, meticulous planning, and rigorous calculation, this Makara GRR study produced a 180º convincing result (77% of our tests are Gauge capable vs. >75% of tests were non-repeatable for the previous study done for Megalodon).

Picked by Grenada Core Team to provide critical data analysis support to rescue Grenada’s Yield/Test Time issues. Mission successfully completed, and the Product was put on to industry’s competitive market in time.

Complex cash to cash cycle analysis on Seagate’s shipments from cradle (Wafers) to Ship to Customers (Drives).

Technical Lead of 8-member team in developing customized key analytics features in KNIME software.

Designated by management to be responsible for numerous Seagate's critical pioneering products:

C-drive (C1) – Seagate's 1st HGA sample testing program designed for Xbox consumer drives

Neptune (Momentum) – Seagate's 1st Mobile drives for Notebook market

Mercury (Momentum II) – Seagate's 1st TGMR pioneering drives for Notebook

Galaxy – Industry’s 1st 750G desktop drive

Brinks – Seagate's 1st successfully launched F3 Platform desktop program

Muskie – Seagate's 1st Load/Unload desktop program

Grenada – HDD Market’s 1st 1TB/Disc product

Successfully launched every aforementioned program with most skilled and sophisticated statistical analysis knowledge.

Tutored and advised innumerous engineers on data collection and analysis techniques.

Created and developed robust sampling test schema applied to low-cost C1, C2, and S1 consumer electronic programs.

Ingeniously invented many handy analytical tools, including the famous and beloved DIDA, SQL123, Multi-Distribution Overlay, cleverly designed for performing sophisticated statistical analysis with quick and succinct, yet powerful graphical presentations.

Specialized in optimizing disk drive yield performance through analysis of component and drive test data.

Excellently received Six Sigma trainings, including Green Belt and Design for Six Sigma.

Graduate Research Assistant: August 1994 – April 1999

Metallurgical Engineering Department, University of Missouri-Rolla

Performed extensive research in studying piezoelectric materials microstructure – electrical properties relationship:

1.Specifically Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 family based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics

2.Using both TEM and SEM Electron Microscopes, performed microstructural and microchemical characterization on perovskite structure materials prepared from processing ceramic powders all the way to sintering

Brought forth a quantitative relaxation time spectrum model for piezoelectric materials which the scientific community could not resolve beyond the qualitative description in literature for at least one decade.

Determined and characterized the carbon diffusion mechanism of damping capacity degradation in copper-manganese alloy.

Created a set of virtual instruments using LabView to control General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) in measuring the dc biased dielectric constant and loss.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Programming: R, Python, d3 Java Script, C++, Visual Basic, JSL (JMP Scripting Language), Matlab, LabView, Mathematica, Pascal, Fortran, Oracle SQL, PL/SQL.

Application Tool: KNIME, Alteryx, Rapidminer, SAS JMP, Statistica, Excel, Minitab, Origin, KaleidaGraph.

EDUCATION

Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering (Mar 1999), University of Missouri-Rolla, Rolla, Missouri. GPA: 3.9/4.0.

Critical Analytical Tools Developed

DIDA – Drive Integrated Data Assembler. Designed for anyone in Seagate, even for data laymen. Collecting multiple data parametric data in one shot. Easy to use, most user-friendly. Requires almost zero learning curve. Most beloved and trusted drive data tool among its peers.

Multi-Distribution Overlay – Faithfully sketches the shape of every distribution and overlays them together for instant and clear comparison, along with statistical significance comparison circles.

Wafermapping – A wafermap is just a click away, with lots of indispensable interacting features. Later adopted as one of ADS (Advanced Data System group, James Lee, NRM) analytical tools.

Quantile Pattern Mapping – A powerful, robust tool in summarizing and identifying Quantile patterns among objects of interest, specifically designed for Reliability failure coherent analysis. Later adopted as one of ADS analytical package tools.

Balls in distribution – Clearly labels and locates each interest's position w.r.t. parent distribution, an indispensable tool for Drive Stability failure analysis.

Exploratory data analytic tool ensemble – a set of sophisticated, yet easy to use, tool module for advanced data mining and statistical analysis.
