DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES AS A STAFF NURSE IN ICU
ABOUT MY UNIT (Intensive care Unit)
Caters to the need of patients who are placed in the icu and who are critically ill, those on ventilator support, those requiring long term medical and surgical care. The unit is interwoven with a good team of nurses, doctors and x-ray technicians. Responsibilities are shared and thus harmonious relationships exist. At any given time, the department has eminent medical personnel and nursing staff. The day shifts are however stocked with more medical personnel. The unit specially cares for the parents or parent or guardian of these patients, psychologically, spiritually and socially. Counseling family members about the further treatment modalities and diagnoses have always played a great role.
NURSING DUTIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF NEURO
• Complete physical assessment of a patient and its admission to the unit.
• Caring for the nutritional needs of the patient
• Giving spoon / cup feeding
• Naso-gastric tube feeding
• Gastrostomy feeds
• Maintenance of nutrition via intravenous catheter
• Weighing the patient
• Starting peripheral intravenous line
• Calculating and starting intravenous fluids
• Passing a naso-gastric tube
